South Africa's communications regulator, ICASA, has just released its "State of the ICT Sector Report of South Africa, March 2024". It is an important document for stakeholders in the 3 sectors ICASA regulates: telecommunications; postal services and broadcasting. Here are a few initial statistics from the Report: - The national percentage of households with internet access from any location decreased from 77.5% to 75.3% in 2022. There was however an increase in the proportion of households with internet access specifically at home, rising from 10.4% in 2021 to 13% in 2022. - As of 2023, a total of 4,921 schools were connected to the internet, as required by ICASA's Universal Service and Access Obligations. KwaZulu-Natal has the highest number and Gauteng the least. - Telecommunications service providers, reduced the effect of loading shedding in 2023, by spending R2.5 billion on batteries. They spent R930 million on generators. - In 2023, the telecommunications sector experienced a marginal overall revenue increase of 0.07%, reaching R208.2 billion compared to R208.1 billion in 2022. - In 2023, the telecommunications, broadcasting and postal sectors, together, saw a decrease of 5.6% in employment. - 5G population coverage increased from 20% in 2022 to 38.42% in 2023. - The overall revenue from broadcasting services experienced a decline of 14.43%, dropping from R41.2 billion in 2022 to R35.2 billion in 2023. The decreased revenue is as a results a notable 10.72% decrease in the total number of Pay TV subscriptions, dropping from 8,305,578 in 2022 to 7,415,593 in 2023.
