Reflecting on an unprecedented investment conference I attended recently, I can wholeheartedly say it tops my experiences in over a dozen years in the industry. What made it truly remarkable wasn't the venue, but the inspiring mix of professionals and clients who were present. Breaking the mold, the event skipped the usual advisor-only gatherings and instead welcomed over 270 attendees, including Advisors, Clients, and their CPAs/Attorneys—a refreshing tableau of the financial community. It was the first conference I've seen that promoted such an integrated environment, offering a rare glimpse 'under the hood' to clients and forging stronger, more transparent connections. The buzz surrounding the conference still lingers, echoing the vital realization that struck me: true worth lies in the pursuit of a life of significance rather than just conventional success. Wealth and happiness may often define success, but I left the conference contemplating a deeper purpose. It's not just about the accumulation of wealth or personal contentment; it's how we utilize our resources and share joy with others. Embracing this philosophy, my family and I are committed to making meaningful contributions with the time we have—establishing a legacy that resonates with future generations. “When a founder does that, it makes me feel like they’re not trying.” -from a very active fund & angel investor I asked what founders do that deter them from getting a next meeting. The list could be a mile long, ❌ but the biggest thing that stands out to him is when a founder doesn’t work on building the relationship & tries to share their pitch deck right away. This can come from excitement or nerves, 👉 but forgetting to build a relationship with a potential investor or not trying to get to know them can come across as lazy & ignorant. You don’t just have to take my word for it, I polled over 120 investors and this was in their top 5 “pet peeves” & “they won’t get a next meeting” bucket. Some might ask you to share a deck right away on a call, 🙌 but working on the relationship and preparing questions for them is ALL part of a recipe for success.
