Skanska completes £450M enabling works at Euston to prepare for new HS2 station #Skanska has completed £450M of enabling works at Euston station in preparation for the new HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd #London terminus, which remains unfunded. The contractor said that the work was done for Network Rail and that it has “transformed the station, preparing it for the arrival of the HS2 rail line”. It explained that “significant changes” were needed at the current Euston station, which serves conventional rail services, to allow it for the overlaps between the planned HS2 route and existing rail infrastructure. The works have also ensured the station can remain operational throughout the HS2 construction works, Skanska added. It stated that the works required “an immense amount of planning and coordination across multiple teams”. It saw 43 different multi-disciplinary projects taking place around Euston station to facilitate the future construction of HS2 Euston. These design and build projects included strengthening and cladding the station building, demolishing two 30m x 300m platforms, constructing a new maintenance delivery unit on the parcel deck, constructing a building to house new waste compactors, a new 11kv network including four high voltage substations to power the whole station, extensive works in the basement and “other significant works”. The contract has been running for seven years and at its peak employed over 200 people. The project team achieved 3.25M hours without report of injury and exceeded the target of 15% carbon reduction, with some packages achieving a reduction of greater than 80%. Skanska project director James Ralph said he was “enormously proud of everyone involved in this project”. “The Skanska project team, along with our supply chain partners and customer Network Rail, have faced many complex challenges but have always fostered a collaborative, people-first culture,” he continued.” Network Rail programme manager Neil Soden ChPP RPP MAPM said that Skanska and the supply chain had delivered “a fantastic amount of work” over the last seven years. “The team worked so closely with us and all of the other station stakeholders with safe delivery and the customer outcomes always being at the heart of their purpose,” Soden added.” Status of HS2 Euston HS2 Euston station and the tunnel from the new Old Oak Common superhub in west London to the new London terminus are still officially paused and unfunded. Skanska is part of the Skanska Costain Group PLC STRABAG joint venture (SCS) that is delivering the London tunnels for HS2. Despite not yet having the green light to proceed with the twin-bored Euston tunnel, the contractor is planning to assemble two tunnel boring machines in the basement of Old Oak Common later this year in preparation. https://lnkd.in/ekhDuwNQ
