At this (Heating Air-conditioning Refrigeration and Fluid) exhibition, I was able to observe the trends in Korea's cooling market, which I summarized into two key keywords. The first is the rapid transition to low GWP refrigerants. Major domestic companies are considering various eco-friendly refrigerant such as R-513a, R-1233zd, R-1234ze, R-448A, R-744 and R-32. The second trend is the growth of the IT cooling industry. As a fast follower in the global cooling market, Korea is striving to dominate the untapped domestic IT market through partnerships with global leaders.

Since their introduction in the early 1980s, silicon MOSFETs have been the mainstay of power conversion technology, in particular for high frequency switching power converters. While the technology has advanced, many of the MOSFET characteristics have changed dramatically in recent years and designers need to update their knowledge base accordingly.   This seminar will cover characteristics of today’s high performance MOSFETs using their datasheets as reference. Instead of explaining away datasheet numbers line by line, we will be grouping them functionally, explain how they are characterized by the manufacturers and how they should be interpreted for real world applications. Unique features such as extremely nonlinear capacitances and body diode behavior will be discussed in depth. MOSFET datasheets carry a number of legacy parameters, specifically those relating to current and power ratings, that are no longer relevant in today’s design environments. These will be highlighted during the course. Designers will get a clear idea which numbers or curve they need to look up in the datasheet, and the impact those numbers will have on their design. A large number of misconceptions have accumulated over the years, in addition to legacy notions that need to be discarded. Designers will learn how to navigate around the misconceptions and avoid common design errors.   Recently there has been an explosive growth in power applications besides high frequency switching, such as motor control and automotive electronics. Today’s designers are a diverse group, with different backgrounds and different levels of exposure to power conversion practices. The seminar is aimed at MOSFET users in all these application areas and designed to be useful to engineers both at the intermediate and advanced levels.
