Leadership Matters
Sam Bahadur- a General officer who always stood by his men.
This story, as we remember it on Sam Bahadur's 110th birthday, highlights his unconventional leadership style and unwavering support for his troops.
In December 1963, Sam took command of the Western Army. During a visit to the Mizo Hills, he discovered a critical communication bottleneck. The existing phone lines were inadequate, and the Post and Telegraph Department estimated 4-5 years to establish a new line due to the long distance (over 200 kilometers).
This bureaucratic delay frustrated Sam. He questioned, "That's too long. Can't we do it ourselves?"
However, regulations stipulated that only the Post and Telegraph Department could own telephone lines, forcing the Army to rely on their services. This conversation, which took place over drinks in the brigade mess with Brigadier R.Z. Kabraji (the brigade commander) present, sparked an unorthodox solution.
Sam, perhaps jokingly, challenged the Signals Officer, "How long would it take to lay the line ourselves, if you had the supplies?"
The young and impulsive Signals Officer took the challenge seriously. He assembled a fleet of trucks and headed straight to the P&T Department's supply depot in Silchar. When the official on duty protested, the officer disregarded him, taking the necessary supplies and holding the official for a week!
Predictably, the Post and Telegraph Department was furious. They reported the incident as "theft" and "kidnapping" to the Ministry, escalating the issue to Army HQ. Disciplinary action loomed for both the Signals Officer and the Brigade Commander.
Fortunately, by this time, the new line was nearing completion. When the Army Commander was informed about the situation, Sam readily took full responsibility. Though Sam had forgotten about the incident, he immediately wrote to the Chief assuming full responsibility for the officer's actions, saying that he had acted on his specific orders. Though he likely didn't anticipate the officer's literal interpretation of his earlier remark, Sam stood by his men, writing to the Chief and accepting blame for authorizing the operation.
His unwavering support for his troops, even in the face of consequences, solidified his reputation as a leader who commanded respect and loyalty. It's a story that reflects a bygone era of military leadership, where boldness and taking responsibility were hallmarks of a true leader.
Army is a way of life with written and many more unwritten ethical codes and human value system where leadership is an honour and respected. It all boils down to having balls. Sam had that in sufficient supply. In fact, he had a big store of that material.
