For the Startup in Residence program by Gemeente Den Haag, Better Future Factory developed a modular parklet system tailored to residents' needs and new uses for parking spots. 🚧 The Challenge Dutch streets, often designed before cars became common, struggle with parked cars, charging poles, waste containers, and more. Streets must also become climate adaptive, and residents should feel responsible for their streets. 🔧 Flexible Use Creative sessions with residents led to a parklet configured as a mini-park with plants, a garden workbench, water tank, mini library, and benches. Inspired by Studio Klinkenberg's design, the parklet can be configured in various ways using five “puzzle pieces. ♻️ Circular Materials The parklet is made from sustainable materials: recycled artificial grass for decking, planters from 100% recycled plastic, and European thermo wood (so no paint is needed) for the wooden elements, providing durability with a low environmental footprint. I have spoken about the issue of washing man made fibres in washing machines and how this releases micro and nano plastics. This new Bill introduced to reduce the 500,000 tonnes of microplastic pollution released into our oceans. The Bill would require washing machine manufacturers to fit microplastic-catching filters in all new domestic and commercial washing machines. The Bill also aims to raise awareness of the polluting effects of microplastics on our rivers and seas. https://lnkd.in/evE_xxaa Please talk about this subject, spread the word! #pollution #microplastics #nanoplastics #washingmachine #katebush British Institute of Interior Design Interior Design Declares - UK SDC - Sustainable Design Collective

GIVING WASTE A SECOND LIFE! 🙌 Share this video if you hope to see more creativity like this in upcycling waste! Did you know that only 9% of plastic ever produced has been recycled? To provide people a more beautiful way of upcycling plastic, especially those that are harder to recycle like old DVD boxes, contact lens cases, and thick plastic cups or containers, Müll Club accepts clean plastics from people across the UK, and turns them into beautiful, practical pieces of decor and even furniture! Working with ethical beauty retailers, car brands, and even the London Festival of Architecture, Müll’s products give new life, and new perspective on what we waste, where it ends up, and how we can offer alternative solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems. Here are some cool facts about Müll that we love too: ✨ Microplastics never end up in the bin or their surrounding environment, as any extra cuts, bits that fall on the floor, or unused pieces all get collected and melted back down to be made into something new! 🌞The studio is entirely powered by renewable energy! 📦Customers from across the UK mail their plastics to the Müll team via Royal Mail. This ensures that no ‘extra’ trips for deliveries must be made to the Müll studio, as everything is delivered along the daily postal routes. 💻Those who send their plastics to Müll can track their impact on the Müll Club web platform. Thank you so much to Charlie for welcoming us into her studio on a beautiful sunny day in Margate, and for doing such cool, beautiful work! #gogreen #ecodesign #goinggreen #nature #sustainability #eco #sustainable #earth #sustainabledesign #design #architecture #sustainablearchitecture

🫵Are you interested to see what a circular design solution process look like from start to finish? Our mate Rui Peng at Critical. Put together a teaser video of a recent engagement with Watercare Services Limited to give a better idea of what this looks like behind the scenes. 🙌Now you can explore how you can turn your waste stream into valuable products for your own organisation. If you are interested to find out more reach out, we would love to discuss how this might work for your organisation.🔥🔥 #CircularEconomy #SustainableDesign #WasteReduction #InnovationInAction #SpacebarDesign #GreenBuilding #EcoFriendly #Upcycling #RethinkWaste #ConstructionInnovation
Co-founder & CEO at Critical. | Startmate Accelerator S22 Alumni | TEDx Speaker | I help designers create beautiful spaces using 100% recycled plastic panels called Cleanstone.
We're proud to partner with Watercare Services Limited to kick off the transformation of expired hardhats into Critical. Cleanstone and the beautiful products that can be made using it! Here's teaser video showing the process: SOUND ON. It's a very accurate account of what happened. In Aotearoa we only recycle 4 out of 24 plastic types and hard hats being made from ABS is considered as 'hard to recycle'. This means most of it end up in landfill. For safety reasons, hardhats have an average life span of approximately 2-3 years before expiry. And with approximately 10.7% of Aotearoa's population working in construction, Aotearoa uses a lot of them... ABS, which is the same plastic as your Lego Brick, contains amazing properties. It is dimensionally stable, hard wearing, dense, scratch resistant and have incredibly high impact strength, often used as manufactured car parts. When transformed into Critical. Cleanstone we can harness those properties as a decorative construction panel that is highly durable and suitable for many construction and fit out uses cases. By doing so, we are also extending its lifecycle by a lifetime. And make it forever recycle-able too. Which is why we're really excited through the use of Critical.'s technology to transform this waste material into a precious resource. And now working in partnership with Anson Kong from Spacebar Design, we can take circularity a step further to transform Cleanstone panels into all sorts of products including this beautiful folding table. More about this partnership soon!! Ngā mihi nui mahana Shaye Va and Bernice Chiam for pioneering this programme with us and tēnā koutou Nicole Sips (Auckland Council) Jason Pietzner and Laramie McCallum (Cleanline Tasman - Workwear & PPE Specialists) - I can't wait to see how far we can take this together moving forward. FFD to highlight circular economy projects Flanders Flooring Days will demonstrate increased research into flooring’s circular economy next summer. The European Green Deal, introduced in 2019, aims to ensure a climate-neutral EU by 2050. Part of this involves the creation of a circular economy, where raw materials are kept in circulation for as long as possible. Belgian textile and plastics research centre Centexbel and 18 European partners have created the CISUFLO (Circular Sustainable Floor Coverings) project, focused on the circularity of carpet, vinyl and laminate. The project’s new practical guidance tool will be on show at the exhibition. The Living Lab Carpet, supported by VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship, aims to give worn-out carpets a second or even third life. It investigates where old carpets end up and what condition they are in to find out if they are still suitable for reuse, repair or renovation. To get all stakeholders on the same page, it has developed a comprehensive training plan and in doing so, Living Lab Carpet is reducing overall environmental impact by 40%, while at the same time cutting resource consumption by 60%. The event takes place across Flanders from 2-5 June. https://lnkd.in/ebaHMunf #flooring #flooringindustry #flooringshow

15 Months Later: Performance Testing of Materials in the Real World Remember my pool project from last summer? Here's something I didn't mention – I clad it with our betterJOINERY Exposed carcass material. After 15 months of intense real-world testing (including endless kid bombs!), the results are in. Despite not being designed for outdoor use, betterJOINERY has proven its exceptional durability: 🚰 Moisture resistant 🪵 Natural 'Exposed' look in White Noise or Black ☠️ Zero formaldehyde or VOC emissions ⚒️ Superior edge and screw hold 🗑️ 100% recyclable through saveBOARD The question is: Why are we still defaulting to MDF? It's moisture-sensitive, paper-covered, potentially toxic, structurally weaker, and destined for landfill. Here's the environmental impact: Australia produces approximately 200,000 kitchen renovations annually, with New Zealand adding another 40,000. Shockingly, 95% of these materials at end of life are a wasted opportunity. Ready to make a sustainable choice for your next project? Let's talk about how betterJOINERY can help you build better, cleaner, and more sustainably. #ClientInspiredInnovation #CircularEconomy #SustainableJoinery #InnovationByDesign #GreenBuilding #LowCarbonBuildingMaterials
