Together with UGANDA CHILD RIGHTS NGO NETWORK - UCRNN we engaged children and parliamentarians on children’s rights and welfare. Children presented their concerns, especially the need to be protected from abuse and exploitation. “We need to have stronger child protection laws to prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable children,” said Mark, one of the children at the dialogue. Robert Doya Nanima, a committee member of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child pledged to influence funding for child mental health services, social care, and educational resources, ensuring that children have the services they need to thrive. Parliamentarians are committed to ensuring that children’s voices are considered in developing policies, especially those related to welfare, education, and protection. The rights of children to be heard in all matters that concern them is a priority for Save the Children in accordance with the child participation principles in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and regional child rights treaties such as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC).

I joined the Welfare Rights Centre board after reading their Reconciliation Action Plan, and learning about the genuine commitment to reconciliation by the Centre and staff. Welfare Rights Centre (WRC) provides free legal advice to help people navigate the complex social security system. They work to address the discrimination and intersectional disadvantage experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. WRC provide community education on things like ABSTUDY, they build relationships & trust by attending important events like the Yabun Festival and as an active supporter of the 2024 Referendum on the Voice. WRC shows up, speaks up and makes change. I am proud that WRC employs an Aboriginal person as the First Nations Access officer. A person with lived experience who understands the issues faced by mob, such as intergenerational trauma, a mistrust of government and disproportionate gaps in health, education, employment, and justice. We have seen, firsthand, the impact that the First Nations Access officer can have for individuals and community. Not funded through Government grants, WRC invests in the First Nations Access officer because it recognizes the unique complexities faced by First Nations people and the importance of this role in achieving fair and just outcomes for mob. These outcomes could not be achieved without the First Nations Access officer. This role is now under threat. It is important that the WRC can continue to fund First Nations Access. Read Maria Arabella Robles's insightful article discussing the historic $23.34 billion settlement in the First Nations Child Welfare Class Action. This settlement not only compensates eligible First Nations children and their caregivers for the systemic discrimination they faced since 1991 but also establishes a new precedent for justice and reform in Canada. As stated by the Government of Canada, "[t]his funding supports Mediate BC’s Navigating Collaborative Decision-Making in Child Welfare project. Through this program, Mediate BC is developing public legal education and information resources and is providing legal support for Indigenous and racialized families navigating the child welfare system. This includes the creation and distribution of plain language resources in multiple languages, community outreach and workshops, and the expansion of legal advice and support services provided by Collaborative Decision-Making Navigators. Collectively, these efforts will further improve outcomes for children and youth navigating the justice system while addressing the barriers Indigenous and racialized families face in child protection processes." https://lnkd.in/gNRr8a5E

"Bal Uday, a Child Welfare Community committed to bridging the awareness gap on Child Rights." In our pursuit of safeguarding children from potential exploitation, we've designed a comprehensive two-tier program: Group 1, comprising Teachers, Parents, and Nodal Officers, receives targeted education on Child Rights, empowering them to be vigilant advocates. Simultaneously, Group 2, the children themselves, undergo engaging sessions enlightening them about rights, wrongs, and legal do's and don'ts. This holistic approach not only benefits those currently affected by a lack of awareness but also establishes a robust redressal mechanism. By identifying accessible authorities and organizations for counseling and legal action, we aim to provide timely support. Bal Uday goes beyond remediation; it's a proactive initiative to prevent children from becoming victims or offenders. Join us in creating a safer future, where every child has access to proper legal remedies. "Together, let's build a community that nurtures and protects our children.

🔍It's #TopicAreaTuesday! We invite you to browse interventions on the CEBC website designed to address disparities in the child welfare services received by minorities and the disproportionate representation of ethnic minorities in the child welfare system. 👉 The Reducing Racial Disparity and Disproportionality in Child Welfare: Programs topic area, https://lnkd.in/gb3vB7mn highlights programs that propose replicable strategies for reducing disparities and disproportionality. Qualifying programs work to reduce disparity and/or disproportionality at various stages in the child welfare system: screening for child abuse and neglect; investigation of allegations; service provision to families, children, and adolescents; out-of-family placement in foster care; adoption; and reunification. #childwelfare #evidencebased #evidencebasedpractices #WeAreChildWelfare #Equity
