Thank you, Dr. Carla Smith, Ed.D., for elevating such critical conversations around #NationalComingOutDay, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, and the expansion of Black leadership. Speaker Adrienne Adams advocacy is a powerful reminder that the intersection of our identities is where we find the most opportunity for impact and change. As a queer Black leader, I recognize that visibility and representation are not just milestones to celebrate; they are the foundation for lasting equity. We must continue to push the envelope by supporting initiatives that create safe spaces for all, while also empowering Black leadership to thrive in every sector. Our communities need to see themselves reflected in positions of power, in boardrooms, and in the conversations that shape our future. Black women, no matter their industry, are facing bullsh*t in the workplace everyday. When I left education to start my coaching business last year I focused on reaching Black women in the education sector. (mainly because this is what I knew) But as I continued to speak about my experiences Black women from different sectors began to reach out. All with stories similar to mine ►Difficult staff who they were struggling to manage ►Feeling invisible in the workplace ►Scared to stand up for themselves ►Frustrated from being overlooked. Like me at the beginning of my leadership journey, these women were exhausted Struggling in environments that didn’t see them Often shrinking themselves just to survive. The more I listened, the more I realised that the issues we face as Black women wasn’t sector-specific—it was universal ►Navigating bias, ►Being the “only one” ►Managing the pressure to prove ourselves constantly We share common struggles, yet too often we face them alone. Save yourself from the demise of performative equity—the kind that shows up on t-shirts, website banners, social media posts, clever quotes, and blogs. Meanwhile, Black and Brown individuals struggle to be seen, heard, embraced, developed, coached, and sponsored. The global majority have to code-switch, hide their culture, and navigate emotional roller coasters while receiving micro and macro-aggressions. We deserve the truth as a community. We deserve transparency and to be heard regardless of our position, influence, or wealth. Many leaders in the community and CEOs of non-profits feel gaslighted by their board of directors or senior leadership team, scrutinized, and sometimes removed from their positions without regard. I can quote five organizations in the last 3 years that put Black and Brown leaders in place, only to then remove them because of boardroom discord. Juneteenth is about celebrating the freedom of Black people, but we have a LONG WAY to go to guarantee all freedoms. #juneteenth #freedom #change Civic Canvas

Why were wh.ite ⚪️leaders painfully quiet this #BlackHistoryMonth? For Fast Company ✍🏽 I delve into the unsettling reality of dwindling #DEI commitments amidst rising challenges. And mention the silence that others like Elizabeth Leiba , Adriele Parker , and Tammy Triolo 🦅 Six Sigma Black belt🇧🇸 called out last month. 👩🏽🏫I introduce what I coined the “Red Rover Effect”. Did you play this childhood game? Retreat to the opposing side is a cornerstone of the game, and retreat is an option that Black people and other historically excluded communities have never had. In this real-life game, the stakes far surpass the childhood whimsy of schoolyard chants, grass-stained jeans, and scraped knees; they are more akin to the gravitas of the Hunger Games. The status quo marches on. And Black people die. 👩🏽🏫 For some ⚪️ allies, there is a limit to their solidarity, as if to say, “We don’t believe this is right, but we’re tired of being uncomfortable.” 👩🏽🏫 I firmly believe in a world where the stronghold of white supremacy is broken, and DEI transcends beyond mere concepts. But that reality, unfortunately, depends on ⚪️ allies' willingness to continually confront the barriers that perpetuate systemic injustice. The resolve is waning, and it’s no surprise. 👩🏽🏫 I implore us to recognize the reality of anti-DEI sentiment for what it is: a distraction tactic from what white people truly fear—a future where the game isn’t rigged in their favor.
