As a technologist and neuroscientist, I don't like to bash on people excited about tech, especially #neurotechnology and #BCI (Brain Computer Interfaces), but there is a lot of hype mixed with confusion in this space. No - the AirPods will never be able to "read your thoughts". Even full-fledged EEGs with 256 channels does not 'read your (specific) thoughts' - at all. In general, EEG picks up high-level and smoothed brain activity. There are physics limitations (like the inverse problem) to what we can do extracranially/non-invasively, which is why the intracranial and invasive stuff is much more interesting long-term and in terms of the precision of what can be measured and, consequently, achieved (i.e. what companies like Neuralink Precision Neuroscience BrainGate Team and others in this space are doing). Most of the studies reconstructing images that people are seeing, from brain signals, are with fMRI rather than EEG. More importantly though - they are limited to a very narrow set of image categories and it isn't a full high-resolution reconstruction of arbitrary things people are being shown in these experiments. --- Our team at Maaind works on real-world neuroadaptive AI technology in more accessible ways than traditional BCIs (though we use these too where relevant), enabling new human-computer affective and adaptive interactions.
