Is paying $50+ a month for the premium version of a dating app actually worth it? We analyzed thousands of app store reviews for Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, and found was that: 1) Slightly over half of premium users for Tinder were satisfied with the improvements in user experience and matching success, and a similar proportion felt like the price was worth it. And 2) An even greater 60% of premium users for Bumble and Hinge were overall happy with their purchase. BUT I do think it’s worth mentioning that around half of each app’s user base were already pretty satisfied with the free version to begin with. And interestingly enough, I also found that different people define “matching success” in different ways. Announcing our first beta launch from Taboo: seren, a dating app that only works out in the world, wherever you are, but never at home. Read more for the backstory: When Alexis Kay and I first started talking about shame, dating and dating apps kept coming up in conversation. Not only between us, but with so many of our friends. It’s no secret the current dating landscape isn’t leading many people to happiness. After years of swiping, bad dates, ghosting, and worse, people are burnt out. And the subscription and upsell business models of dating apps are only leading to further anxiety. The very tools that were supposed to lead people to love and connection have actually just become lonely games played at home, alone. So, we asked ourselves: what would a dating app look like if technology were a true bridge to connection, as opposed to an island you might get stuck on for a decade? From this provocation, the idea for seren was born. seren is not an app to swipe on forever — or at all — but one that acts as a companion to your real life, that only works out in the real world, connecting you to people in the places where you’re already going. It certainly seemed like something worth exploring, and worth exploring in a way that was fast and focused. Over the course of the past eight weeks, we’ve gone from hand-drawn wireframes and qualitative insights to an in-market pilot of a working prototype. Over the next four weeks, we’ll be collecting data on how people use this prototype. This three-month timeline to go from idea to validation is a process we will keep applying to the big, nebulous topic of shame. Dating is just the first stop.
