Copied from a friend that was gracious enough to post this for those that are in need of a new career: I know it’s not as sexy as a company that shows up in Super Bowl ads, but I’d like to humbly suggest that anyone looking right now who’s interested in stability check out local government jobs. Many are in desperate need of tons of roles, and tech-savvy individuals in general even if not in technology roles directly! Additionally, many roles are union-protected and the benefits and stability are head and shoulders above a for-profit company - I once had someone tell me that I “have the most job security of any person [he’s] ever met”. Former FOCers are practically super-powered in the environment of many local governments because of the embedded cultural drive for excellence that is instilled or biased for in hiring at the FOC. It’s not as high-tech, and yes some things can move at a painfully slow pace, but the work-life balance and job satisfaction are unbeatable. #CareerBreakJourney As I dive into the world of job hunting and engage in conversations with hiring managers and recruiters, one of the earliest questions that often arises is, "I see you left your previous job in June. What have you been doing since then?" Well, I've embarked on an extraordinary journey, and it's time to share it with all of you. I had the remarkable privilege of participating in our city's Citizen Police Academy, an experience I never imagined for myself. The decision sprang from my persistent curiosity about the inner workings of law enforcement, a question that had lingered on my "to-do" list for an extended period. This deep dive into the realm of law enforcement proved to be more than just enlightening. It posed challenges I couldn't have foreseen, compelling me to explore the boundaries of my comfort zone. In this domain, I discovered the vital principles of teamwork, effective communication, and adaptability under circumstances of heightened pressure. Yet, it extended beyond that; it entailed gaining a profound comprehension of the unwavering commitment and devotion that our officers bring to their roles each day. It served as a reminder of the peaceful life we enjoy right now, thanks to the endless sacrifices made by our law enforcement. I take great pride in my graduation from the Citizen Police Academy, as it embodies my belief in the transformative power of curiosity and the courage to step into the unfamiliar. As I reflect on this journey, I eagerly look forward to carrying these invaluable lessons into my forthcoming opportunities, whatever they may be. I've hit a career milestone. I was accepted to present at my daughter's First Grade Career Day program. My efforts will now be spent on preparing my presentation. I will have to try to explain to a group of 6 and 7-year-olds what I do and how they can be like me one day. Can the data professional become the modern-day Police Officer, Firefighter, Doctor, and/or Nurse of career-day professions? After I'm done, it will be. #careerdayrolemodel #getreadykids
