“God sends us friends to be our firm support in the whirlpool of struggle. In the company of friends, we will find strength to attain our sublime ideal.” - Maximilian Kolbe I was driving to work during the most challenging days of my son's battle with brain cancer and felt the need to talk. Without hesitation, I called Luis Gonzalez and told him I needed to hear from a friend. He prayed with me, wept with me, and encouraged me to keep moving forward in my vocation as husband and father with truth, hope, and love. I am blessed to be surrounded by friends like Luis and I pray the same for you.

Don't be friends with your subordinates. How can you command the respect of others when they consider you a friend? If you want to keep control, maintain your distance, and remember, it’s just business. X X X X X X X X There are so many false narratives, limiting beliefs, and dehumanizing parts of the “leadership” concepts shared above: 👉 Friends or not, the people at work are people, and they don't love being called subordinates. 👉 You can be friends with anyone and still engage in difficult conversations. As a leader, it is your responsibility to improve your communication skills (consider taking the Culture Foundations Courses from Undivided Life, available on our website). 👉 Treating people as inputs and objects of utility makes them respect you even LESS, not more. 👉 Leaders shouldn’t “control” the “situation.” They should set a direction and guide the team’s forward momentum, illuminating the pathway when necessary. 👉 And it’s never “just business.” The 40+ hours we spend working each week is a significant part of our lives, and therefore, work is always personal, and leaders should honor that fact. I never expected to see Cody Slape on the calendar when the team was preparing for a two-day marathon test of a new concept we called Open Interviews. Our initial post announcing that anyone could book time with me to discuss a potential job at the company as part of our “building the bench” groundwork was incredibly successful. Even though there was no job description and little explanation, every one of the twenty-six open time slots was reserved quickly. The candidates also submitted their resumes and a brief explanation of their respective areas of interest and expertise. As we reviewed the candidate pool, my excitement grew over their diverse backgrounds and wide range of career experiences. These twenty-six potential teammates included friends, strangers, and people we vaguely knew in the industry. Some sought senior-level roles, while others hoped for an entry-level sales job. Most had college degrees with some MBAs, but nothing prevented the young mother with a high school education and six years of administrative experience. The Open Interviews event was shaping up to be an exciting experiment and a test of my mental stamina. The Fear of Being Still ************** That's the topic they gave me when I was asked to speak at the St. Ann Catholic Parish Men's Summit this weekend. Between my posts about how to Sabbath like you mean it and my love for John Mark Comer's book The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, I can see why I was selected for this topic. Prepping this morning forced me to take an inventory of my current relationship with hurry and recommit to the fact that Hurry and Love are Incompatible. Being busy is not a badge of honor. Being fully present and loving God's will allows us to experience the fruits of an undivided spiritual life. LOVE | JOY | PEACE

In a world where everyone is “busy,” and life is always “go, go, go,” it is a gift to make someone else feel seen and heard. Last night, I was searching through our bookshelves and stumbled upon a Bible given to me by Meredith Reed Fox on February 17, 2000. Just weeks before she gave it to me, I told her I didn’t carry a Bible because it didn’t fit in my cargo pants pocket. Meredith always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was a great listener, a faithful Christian witness, and a joyful giver. She made me feel seen and heard. Two months ago, Meredith completed a long health battle and “ran to Heaven to be in a place that was her true desire.”  She left behind her loving husband, Ben Fox, and their daughter to carry on her legacy. Ben– You are one of the only people I’ve ever met with the same ability to make everyone you meet feel seen and heard. Thank you for your faith and modeled witness of love and sacrifice in our busy world. This post challenges us to pause, take a deep breath, and give the gift of presence to anyone we encounter throughout the day. Eliminate the hurry. Love God’s will. Be the light.

I’ve met virtuous leaders with incredible gifts who rarely share their wisdom, citing humility as their reason. Proclaiming humility can be antithetical to humility itself. If you’ve been given gifts and experiences that can be shared to benefit others and contribute to the common good, perhaps it is your responsibility to share them with others. But what about vanity, pride, and ego when it comes to public talks, thought leadership, and coaching others? It’s all a matter of intention.  If your intentions are solid, your impact will be, too. 

Attention fathers rising through the ranks of your careers - - Don’t ever babysit your kids. I refuse to babysit my seven kids, but it’s not because I am too important or too busy. I am their father (said in my best Vader voice). When a father cares for the needs of his children, the act is called Fatherhood. Fathers, don’t discount your critical role in your children’s lives by labeling this act “babysitting.” Fatherhood is a blessing, and I am honored when I “get to” care for our little stormtroopers.
