It was a great experience to be a part of the first 3 Air Separation plant commissioning of Praxair India and working in Operations of these ASU’s (ACS technology with Model Predictive Control (MPC), far ahead of its time!) (Involved in JPOCL – 1 commissioning too). I had always had a flair for Sales (incidentally had an offer from a company for a sales role while in college but didn’t join) but working in Projects, Commissioning and Operations gave a different high altogether! Looking back, I feel that everything happens for a reason! Subsequently my career took a different trajectory when I worked in CO2 plants as a Plant Manager and was later groomed for a potential Business Manager role with a stint in a PFS (pump fill station). I still recollect the day I moved into a Business Manager role which would be a paradigm shift from a pure technical role to a role in sales. I developed cold feet and requested for a meeting with the Head of Sales. When I expressed my apprehensions to him, he said something that set me thinking. He replied in only one sentence as a matter of fact “We are all born salesmen including you! Haven’t you sold anything to your parents or spouse?” You would have to sell a product in this role ! This really resonated with me. He was right-we are all selling something or the other almost everyday…..we do this when we want to get something done. Sales is a way of life. We first create a sales pitch and then influence others to believe that’s the best option for them as well. I didn’t realize at that point that fate would take me to an unchartered territory – I would be getting into a sales role in future as well, albeit a different kind of selling. To cut a long story short, a few weeks later, I got a call from ABC Consultants stating that the Regional Head would like to meet up with me. What was seemingly a potential opportunity with a prospective client turned out to be an offer to join ABC. Today I sell with passion – I pitch jobs and careers to prospective talent and I just love what I do… Yes…Sales is a means to live and a way of life for me…..
