Recently Schuff Steel was invited by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) to take part in their 2nd annual Design for Circularity sustainability workshop, hosted in Walter P Moore's downtown LA office. As a member of the AISC's Sustainability Partner program, we were thrilled to send a couple of team members to represent the fabricator and erector’s point of view. With robust attendance from various well-respected members of the AEC community, the roundtable discussion’s aim was promoting ways to lower embodied carbon in new construction and reduce environmental impacts. #sustainability #steelconstruction
Great things happen when we put our minds together for a common goal! Last week, AISC hosted 18 AEC industry leaders at a collaborative sustainability workshop at Walter P Moore's Los Angeles office. They addressed a hypothetical project plan that minimizes lifecycle carbon emissions for a building, resulting in the least waste at the end of the building's life. Among the topics considered were the lateral system, gravity system, enclosure, foundations, and reuse of steel after future deconstruction. Workshops like this are critical for AISC to learn how to better support designers in their mission to lower the embodied carbon in their projects by using structural steel.
