Philanthropic partnerships are essential for scaling and accelerating impactful research. In a recent The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine webinar, France Córdova, President of the Science Philanthropy Alliance, led a discussion on innovative funding models and the challenges and benefits of these partnerships. The session featured insights from renowned experts Tom Skalak, Senior Advisor to the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation, and Shirley Tilghman, President Emerita and Professor of Molecular Biology and Public Affairs at Princeton University. For #NDSUGivingDay, :I’m asking for the probably overambitious amount of $500,000 for the Transformative Research Leaders Fund. But why not aim for a moonshot in NDSU research? Join me as a champion for the cause. Consider the NDSU football program. The long-term success, with impact on many students across multiple years, has come from time, training, and strengthening. That has been a tremendous recipe for victory. The same recipe for victory is needed for research success: – time, training and strengthening – is needed for researchers to transform. That’s what premier R1 research institutions do to recruit and retain the very best researchers. And that’s what we’re asking you to support this #GivingDay, to catapult NDSU into the upper echelon of R1 research institutions. Make a contribution here: https://lnkd.in/gBc2c78E Learn more and link to the story I've told you about NDSU researchers and how investing in the gift of time is what we need to do right now, to reach those new heights: https://lnkd.in/gDAA36xF

Rare diseases, such as EB, often get overlooked when it comes to the development of new treatments. Due to the complexity of EB, a cure is likely to look like a combination of treatments. Research can make this possible by helping to turn potential EB treatments into a reality. It is our pleasure to be an Irish Research Council Enterprise Mentor organisation to researchers like Zohreh Mousavi Nejad, as they strive to develop new treatment options for EB. Well done on sharing your research at #Summit2023! #butterflyeffect
Absolutely thrilled to have been invited to #Summit2023 hosted by the Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland in Cork and share my research funded by Irish Research Council and Debra - The Butterfly Skin Charity. Special thanks to Prof Nicholas Dunne, Prof Helen McCarthy, and Dr Tanya Levingstone for their support. Dublin City University DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing DCU Research

Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association hosts 14 thematic programmes shaped collaboratively by European foundations. One of these is the Research Forum which brings together leading research-funding foundations who come together to reflect on how they can best support science and innovation. Research assessment lies at the heart of the daily work of those foundations that support science: this practice is rooted in traditional quantitative measurements designed to evaluate research outputs and their impacts, such as journal impact factors and citations. Over the past few decades, new evaluation principles have come to the forefront, recognising the consequences that traditional research quality assessment metrics have had on the research community. Research funding foundations have not shied away from this conversation, transforming their own practices and in some case leading the way to new approaches. If you want to know more about this reflection, you can scroll through my Opinion Piece or go more in-depth by downloading the publication authored by Sevda Kilicalp, Ph.D. Check out our Virtual Library! https://lnkd.in/dSxkRVY2

Three important take-aways from this piece: 1) Bob Grubbs was an amazing human being in so many facets. He was so amazing that he is changing lives even after he passed. 2) Philanthropy matters - and you don't need to be a billionaire to give. This gift was amassed from many donors giving what they can afford. Find something that's important to you and give what you can. 3) Students: pursue your passions. You can find the money. The money will find you. Go do the big, bold things.
In fall 2023, CCE graduate student Krista Dong was named the inaugural Bob and Helen Grubbs Fellow. Working in the Nelson Lab, Dong investigates the reactivity of vinyl carbocations. Since Grubbs’s passing in December 2021, some 100 donors—including former students, colleagues, business partners, and friends—have raised more than $1 million to establish the Bob and Helen Grubbs Fellowship. The endowed fund supports one graduate student or postdoctoral scholar in chemistry each year.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH ADMINISTRATORS DAY International, formerly National, Research Administrator Day on September 25th recognizes the contributions made by administrators every day. Research Administrators and Managers serve an important role in supporting research. They assist the faculty and researchers, protect the institution or organization and assure sound stewardship of sponsored research dollars. Many organizations support Research Administration around the world. Their roles are multifaceted. From oversight of a program to compliance and review, Research Administrators serves every aspect of a project. They keep a project on course. Their management allows other’s to maintain focus on their individual roles as well. Where do Research Administrators work? The role of a Research Administrator leads research goals in many fields. As expected, these stewards are found in health and medical institutions and research facilities. However, they’re also in demand in higher education from liberal arts colleges to research universities and in the government sectors. Both for-profit and non-profit organizations rely on their knowledge and direction. Research administration began in the 1940s with a small number of individuals. They’ve now advanced into the modern age with thousands of acknowledged professionals worldwide. Research Administrators and managers provide value and expertise to the global research enterprise. Taken from: https://lnkd.in/ee-KW427 Congratulations to all my colleagues in this wonderful field!🤗🤗🤗🤗

1moInteresting discussion re innovative funding models via partnerships. I might have preferred to see more explicit mention of the unheralded *infrastructural* side of science, in addition to the familiar basic & applied swimlanes mentioned. Several philanthropies in the alliance have begun providing innovation there.
