WHY ARE SOME PERFUMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS? (Part 2.2) THE INGREDIENTS You can check here for my previous post on the first aspect of ingredients: THE SOURCE, https://lnkd.in/djMVmg4t The second aspect: THE QUALITY. If, for instance a perfumer insists on using Bulgarian rose over Taif rose, then the cost will be higher due to its superior quality. On the contrary, one can opt for synthetic ingredients to lower both the quality and cost. If you've ever wondered why one fragrance is priced significantly higher than another, it often boils down to the quality of ingredient. It's likely that expensive fragrances incorporate more amount of natural ingredients, whereas the cheaper ones may rely more on synthetic components. The third aspect, THE QUANTITY, is closely linked to both Source and Quality. The greater the concentration of rare natural oils in a perfume, the higher the cost. Perfumes are classified by concentration levels: Cologne (2-4% fragrance oil), Eau de Toilette (5-15%), Eau de Parfum (15-20%), and Parfum (20-40%). Generally, Eau de Parfum (EDP) fragrances are more expensive than Eau de Toilette (EDT) due to their higher concentration. The fourth aspect, THE COMPLEXITY is also linked to both the Source of ingredients and their Quality. When rare natural ingredients are combined, the higher the cost of the fragrance. Some fragrances are termed linear or simple, meaning they're composed of a few ingredients from the same fragrance family, creating a consistent scent from start to finish. Others, however, are more complex or layered, with many different ingredients from different fragrance families, creating a changing scent experience. The aim is to create a fragrance that changes as you wear it, starting with a fresh, cool scent and evolving into a warm, sensual aroma. Usually, fragrances that change more or have more ingredients cost more, but sometimes even linear fragrances with just a few ingredients can be expensive. Occasionally, luxury scents may also contain synthetic ingredients that are difficult or expensive to produce. This is the final part on Perfume Ingredients, my next post in this series on factors that influence the price of perfumes will be on "THE AVAILABILITY OR EXCLUSIVITY OF THE FRAGRANCE". Iso & Super® is renowned in the fragrance industry for its distinctive woody and ambery scent. This compound features a medium-strength, woody floral ambergris profile, enhanced by a velvety sensation, making it a favorite in modern fine perfumery and soap formulations. It is celebrated for its high gamma isomer content, which amplifies and deepens the fragrance experience. Iso & Super® offers a dry, ambery, woody cedar-like aroma complemented by hints of ambergris, vetiver, and patchouli, and a slight phenolic nuance. Described by IFF as "smooth, woody, amber" with a "velvet-like" sensation, it adds a sophisticated touch to any fragrance composition. This compound is a synthetic aromatic chemical/bicyclic hydrocarbon that is soluble in alcohol and barely soluble in water (0.00268 g/l at 20°C), appearing as a transparent to yellowish mobile liquid. Thanks to its superb aromatic properties, high compatibility with other ingredients, and extreme adaptability, Iso & Super® can serve as the primary focus of a fragrance at various concentrations. It can also enhance, amplify, impart fullness, and strengthen other fragrance components. Additionally, its flexibility makes it essential in household products and deodorants, where it blends well with musky, woody, and vanilla notes. Iso & Super® is one of the most widely used and well-known aromachemicals in perfumery, giving perfumers the option to enhance other compounds in the fragrance or to “overdose” it for a more pronounced effect. Hedione, also known as methyl dihydrojasmonate, is a synthetic aroma compound commonly used in perfumery for its fresh, jasmine-like scent. It was first synthesized in the 1960s by the Swiss company Firmenich. Synthesis of Hedione: Hedione can be synthesized through several chemical routes, but one common method involves the following steps: Acylation: Acetophenone is reacted with formic acid and acetic anhydride to form a β-keto ester. Cyclization: The β-keto ester undergoes cyclization in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydroxide, to form a cyclic enol ether. Reduction: The cyclic enol ether is then reduced using sodium borohydride or another reducing agent to yield the desired product, methyl dihydrojasmonate (Hedione). Application of Hedione: Hedione has found wide application in the fragrance industry due to its pleasant floral scent reminiscent of jasmine. It is used in various perfumes and cosmetic products to impart a fresh, airy, and slightly fruity aroma. Its versatility allows it to blend well with a variety of other fragrance components, making it a popular choice for perfumers. Here are some common applications of Hedione: Perfumes: Hedione is often used as a key ingredient in perfumes, particularly in floral and fresh fragrances. It adds a light, airy quality and enhances the overall bouquet of the scent. Cosmetic Products: Hedione is also used in various cosmetic products such as lotions, creams, and body sprays to impart a pleasant fragrance. Air Fresheners: Due to its fresh and uplifting scent, Hedione is sometimes used in air fresheners and household products to add a floral note to the air. Fabric Softeners: It is also used in fabric softeners to impart a delicate floral fragrance to laundered clothes. Candles and Home Fragrance Products: Hedione can be found in scented candles and other home fragrance products to create a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. Overall, Hedione is valued in perfumery and cosmetic industries for its ability to enhance fragrances with its light, floral aroma, making it a popular choice among perfumers and consumers alike. #hedione #synthesis #fragrance #flavours #flavors #flavors #perfume #perfumes #perfumery #acetylation #reduction
