"What does it mean to “move the needle”? In thinking about the theme for the 2025 ACPM annual conference, the planning committee and ACPM leadership settled on “Moving the Needle for Preventive Medicine and Public Health”. This phrase is a play on words meant not only to immediately evoke Seattle’s famous Space Needle as a recognizable landmark that also serves as a fitting image for the logo of the conference, but more importantly, it connotes the need for change and for actions to drive such changes. Preventive Medicine (PM) specialists are certainly no strangers to both needs: as the medical specialty that bridges between the house of medicine and the house of public health (PH), we are constantly working to promote and protect health, and to prevent disease, disability and premature death for populations as well as the social groups and individuals within them." National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) have announced the establishment of a new advisory committee structure to address Australia’s pressing health and medical challenges. NHMRC Council and the MRFF’s Australian Medical Research Advisory Board will work strategically together to provide advice on Australia's national health and medical research landscape, while a range of other advisory committees will further support both NHMRC and the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care. A call for nominations to the committees will open shortly, including new joint committees and a number of existing committees with new joint responsibilities. Nominations called from individuals interested in the role of research in improving health outcomes for the Australian community, including but not limited to; consumers and community members, industry representatives, philanthropy representatives, physicians and other clinicians, and researchers in all areas of health and medical research and at all career stages. A critical element of translating new evidence into use by humanitarians is 'walking the last mile': integrating new research findings into tools, guidance and capacity-building materials that are suitable for practitioners and others working on the humanitarian front-lines (who do not have time to read journal articles and consider how to apply findings to operational response!). This online course (free, open and available in English, French, and shortly Arabic) is a great example in practice- produced by our incredible grantees at Humanity Inclusion, MSF and Karolinska. The team worked tirelessly on both research and operational engagement to make sure that the tools, guidance and learning materials meet practitioner needs. R2HC is proud to have supported this work which can help humanitarians support patients with traumatic injury to recover. A case study has just been published highlighting the work of our RUDi (Rural Urgent Doctor in-aid) pathway in the Journal of Medical Internet Research. The article highlights the story of RUDi – one of our Real-Time Virtual Support (RTVS) peer pathways for rural providers – successfully supporting the Dawson Creek District Hospital (DCDH) emergency department (ED) in 2021.
