A large challenge in the path to circularity is in waste management infrastructure, especially when it comes to addressing the challenges in plastic recycling. That’s one reason why our Chairman and CEO, H Fisk Johnson, advocates for regulations that incentivize packaged goods companies like SC Johnson to design products with better end-of-life management. These would promote product innovations in recyclability, recycled content usage, and re-use and refill options, which help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or the ocean. In Indonesia, the Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization, IPRO, is already making progress in developing a robust waste management program supported by SC Johnson, to help keep plastic waste from polluting their waterways. Why is recycling plastic so hard? Black plastic is one cause...read on to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gKiRExYT

A Belgian industry association warns of a potential collapse in the plastic packaging recycling market due to challenges in demand and insufficient recycling capacity after the EU has implemented a ban on #PlasticWaste exports both within and outside of Europe. The association also suggests that, in the short term, the new waste shipment regulation might hinder rather than promote progress until additional recycling capacity is established. https://t.ly/5N-6I
What will happen to Europe’s recycling market after the waste export ban?

🌍 Nearly half of Europe's plastic waste ends up in Vietnam's natural landscapes instead of being recycled. 🏭 Minh Khai Craft Village in Vietnam faces challenges with toxic fumes and 7 million liters of daily wastewater from plastic recycling. European Union's strict regulations on plastic recycling contrast with shortcomings in oversight of exported waste. 💔 Outsourcing waste management to places like Minh Khai poses ethical dilemmas and harms communities and the environment. 🌱 Hope for sustainable solutions lies in initiatives like the European Green New Deal and UN negotiations for a global plastics treaty. Today we are proudly announcing that we will shift our credit cards production to use recycled plastic materials and phase out single-use plastics. Once fully transitioned, we will use over 2,250 kilograms of recycled plastics each year, equivalent to the weight of up to 2 sedan cars. The Philippines is known to be a large contributor to plastic waste globally. By shifting to recycled plastic credit cards, we are taking a step towards a more sustainable future for all of us. I think especially about the environment my children (and their children) will grow up in, and hope these steps we are taking today will contribute to a better world for them. https://lnkd.in/gpEd5jds

Managing Director @ Venlo We build growth companies solving global challenges. Design/Build/Scale/Exit
Design is the key to sustainability. It’s not about eliminating plastics, it’s about promoting responsible consumption, enhancing waste management practices, and advancing remanufacturing to reduce environmental impact. The emphasis should be on harnessing the engineered benefits of plastics and minimizing their ecological footprint. This can be achieved by designing products that exploit plastics' exceptional physical properties, ensuring the material's persistence translates into sustainability when managed responsibly. Too much focus on “paper straw type initiatives” will do little to really move the needle. The real test is whether governments will understand this nuance and employ mechanisms like higher levies or additional taxes (everyone loves a new tax 🤯), not just as punitive measures but as tools to foster genuine, impactful change. This is our last chance to set things right and stick to the core goals of the Packaging Waste regulation, as negotiators from the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union are meeting on Monday to wrap up discussions on PPWR.👇 🗑️The proposed change in defining post-consumer plastic waste could allow non-EU countries to dump their plastic trash on our doorstep, threatening Europe's plastic recycling industry. 💸European plastics recyclers have invested hundreds of millions of euros to meet recycling targets, but are now forced to operate below their production capacity, with no signs of recovery in 2024. It's now EU's turn to support their efforts. “It is crucial to ensure that the PPWR will first and foremost pull the demand for recycled plastics in packaging stemming from waste collected and processed in the EU," stated Sophie SICARD-LEMAIRE, President of EuRIC's Plastics Recycling Branch (#EPRB). 🚨Failing on the core ambition embodied by the PPWR would be a huge blow to circular value chains, which are ready to turn EU’s green targets into tangible investments that create local and green industrial jobs - what Europe desperately needs. It’s a big day for us at @Dow! We know there is significant demand for sustainable, circular plastic and packaging solutions from consumers around the world who care deeply about the planet. Our opportunity is increasing the supply of circular feedstock to meet the demand throughout the value chain. As part of Dow's collaboration efforts to ‘Transform the Waste’ and accelerate the circular economy for plastics, we announced an exciting supply agreement with @Freepoint Eco-Systems that will provide Dow exclusive access to 65,000 metric tons per year of certified-circular plastic waste-derived pyrolysis oil. As the sole off-taker of phase one of this new advanced recycling facility being developed in Arizona, Dow will transform this plastic waste – which would otherwise end up in landfills or be incinerated - into high-performing, virgin-grade equivalent plastics. This circular feedstock will then help us develop circular solutions to meet the needs of Brand Owners and value chain partners who are committed to bringing innovative, reliable and sustainable solutions to food-grade packaging, medical and pharmaceutical packaging, and beyond. We couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead! #circulareconomy #transformthewaste #partnership
Today, we announced a new supply agreement with Freepoint Eco-Systems to divert more plastic waste from landfills and convert it into valuable materials. It's another step toward a circular economy for plastics in North America. Learn more: https://dow.inc/4bF480v
