Today is Plastic Overshoot Day – the day when the amount of plastic waste generated exceeds the world’s capacity to manage it, resulting in environmental pollution.   From this point onward, our planet can no longer cope with the excess plastic we produce, and the waste ends up polluting our oceans, rivers, and landscapes. However, there is hope, and one of the most effective ways to push this day further into the future is by recycling and maximizing its impact.   Why recycling is key: 🌿  Less plastic in the environment: Recycling helps reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up polluting nature. 🎯  More efficient use of resources: By recycling, we reduce the need to extract new raw materials for plastic production. ♻  Turning waste into valuable resources: Instead of seeing plastic as waste, we can return it to the economic cycle and give it a second life.   What can we do? 🚀  Companies can promote advanced recycling technologies: New innovations can make the recycling process more efficient and help reduce plastic waste. 🔄  Individuals can take conscious action: By reducing single-use plastics and recycling properly, each of us can contribute to the solution.   Plastic Overshoot Day reminds us that the time to act is now. Recycling is just one part of the solution, but it's a crucial one. It's #PlasticFreeJuly!  So, naturally, we were curious: how impactful is our plastic use on the planet? We were also curious about how plastic pollution impacts us and our communities? Did you know marine plastic pollution accounts for a huge annual financial loss (to the tune of $3700 billion AUD)? These financial losses are associated with plastic pollution, as well as chemical run offs from plastic industries, and can impact tourism, fishing and many other industries resulting in major financial risk and loss. This means by reducing our plastic consumption, we can have a major positive impact on many industries, and strengthen our economies! This year #EarthDay will see leaders from around the world gather in Ottawa for the fourth round of talks to secure a global deal to #BeatPlasticPollution. Why? Because the reality is we’re dealing with a plastic pollution crisis. Plastic is everywhere. From the oceans to the blood in our bodies. 85% of single-use plastic ends up in landfills or mismanaged. This is a crisis that we cannot recycle our way out of: we need a systemic transformation that eliminates single and short lived plastics. One that drastically reduces the flow of virgin plastics to achieve the transition to a circular economy. To do this we need a just, ambitious #PlasticsTreaty that addresses the full life cycle of plastics. A deal that protects nature, human health, climate and helps create jobs. The good news is we have solutions at hand. People across the world are demanding change. Many businesses are innovating with new products and asking for clear, long-term global rules.

“Just as with climate change, a robust UN treaty on plastic pollution can only be made meaningful when it is reinforced at national level, with national leadership and action. Collaborative action is key to identifying these national needs and developing country-level plastic action roadmaps. We need everyone across the plastic value chain involved, from those who produce and use plastic to those who collect it at end of life.” Writing in Agenda for the World Economic Forum, Friend of Ocean Action Dr Douglas McCauley and Director of the Global Plastics Action Partnership Clemence Schmid, outline what’s needed to end plastic pollution once and for all.
