In Arizona, there are approximately 10,000 children and youth ages 0 – 21 years in foster care. Why are kids placed in foster care? That answer is complicated, as it can be a combination of multiple factors. But here are the top four reasons:
1. Neglect
2. Physical abuse
3. Sexual abuse
4. Emotional abuse
No matter the reasons, being removed from everything you know is a deeply traumatic experience. Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation is here to change the story for young people in care by:
- Funding extracurricular activities and experiences that every child deserves to enjoy
- Providing career, education and workforce development services
- Supporting post-secondary students with foster care backgrounds with financial aid not just for tuition and fees, but also for unexpected life emergencies that could prevent them from completing their education

Foster Kids in America-This episode traverses the landscape of foster care, from the Court Appointed Special Advocates in Ohio to the struggles facing older teens on the cusp of independence. We tackle the questions: Why do educational deficits persist among foster children? What leads to the overrepresentation of impoverished youth in the system? And most importantly, how can education and individual advocacy bridge the gap of access and opportunity?

This article captures the real life struggles for a lot of our young adults transitioning out of foster care into the real world and the importance of genuine collaborative efforts between programs and organizations to ensure success during the transition. A huge shoutout to the Great Expectations program and the team at Bright Point Community College. The power of our collaborative efforts changes lives and generations.
Adoption and back to school means we have to constantly reimagine the educational experience for today’s children within diverse families.📚
As a collective, we still have a hard time internalizing that not every student has access to biological relatives. Those blind spots and standard activities geared toward genetically connected families can conjure anxiety, shame, and confusion for students that are not being cared for by biological family members and/or may not have access to origins.
If you are entrusted with the care and nurturing of children or youth through adoption, foster care or guardianship, please be sure you are making it your business to ask questions about curriculum and classroom activities and seeing alternative assignments proactively. 🗣️

Children in foster care belong in the classroom. ✏️🎒
Often, students are removed from their original classrooms for “bad behaviors” that may be developmentally normal for their age.
That's why we partner with stakeholders to help schools embrace trauma-informed care with 504 plans, which are quickly implemented and contain accommodations to keep students' learning and socialization on track.
We want to emphasize "what is strong in you" vs. "what is wrong with you" for our kids.
