New fact in this new article on Washington State Ferries' current bidding for the five new electric-hybrid ferries now underway: "If the bidding goes according to plan, the state might have the two lowest bidders build the boats simultaneously." Would that accelerate the launch schedule and/or lose economies of scale? This article presents other important facts and perspective from the head of the ferry system, Steven Nevey. https://lnkd.in/gNENfWvy #washingtonstateferries #shipbuilding #washingtonstate

📣 Exciting Maritime News! 🚢 Damen Shipyards has secured a contract to supply four fully electric passenger car ferries to BC Ferries in British Columbia! 🇨🇦 These state-of-the-art vessels will revolutionize short-range services in the coastal waters of BC. Based on Damen's renowned Island-class RoRo 8117 E3 model, each ferry will accommodate up to 47 vehicles and 390 passengers. Powered by 2,000-kilowatt battery packs, these ferries will operate using 100% electrical power.⚡️ But that's not all! Damen will also provide shoreside charging equipment, ensuring rapid recharging with renewable electricity during passenger and vehicle embarkation. And for added redundancy, auxiliary diesel engines will be installed as backup power sources. BC Ferries' President and CEO, Nicolas Jimenez, expressed his excitement about the new hybrid electric vessels, highlighting how they will enhance fleet standardization, increase capacity, and improve flexibility in route deployment. This means passengers can rely on safe, reliable, and environmentally conscious ferry services along the coast of British Columbia. Leo Postma, Damen's Area Director Americas, shared his enthusiasm for the order, emphasizing the fruitful collaboration between Damen and BC Ferries over the years. Together, they have developed a series of ten highly efficient ferries that meet the future requirements of sustainable waterborne public transport. These remarkable vessels are expected to commence operations by 2027. Two ferries will serve the Nanaimo Harbour-Gabriola Island route, while the other two will connect Campbell River and Quadra Island. #Damen #Maritime #News #Sustainability

Chief Operating Officer at the Scottish Africa Business Association - helping Scottish businesses to access an unrivalled network between Scotland and Africa
The second ferry being built in Turkey for Scotland's west coast routes will be launched on 8 June, ferries agency CMAL has announced. The MV Loch Indaal is one of four ferries being built at the Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Yalovan. The ferry, which will serve Islay and Jura, is set to be delivered in February 2025. It will then undergo operational trials and crew familiarisation before entering service. The new ferry is the sister of the MV Isle of Islay which was launched in March, ahead of fitting out work. Both vessels will have capacity for up to 450 passengers and 100 cars, or 14 commercial vehicles. They have a more conventional propulsion system than the hybrid LNG ferries being built at Ferguson shipyard, instead using marine diesel engines with some limited battery power for manoeuvring in port. CMAL said the two new ferries for the Islay routes would together provide a 40% increase in vehicle and freight capacity as well as improving the resilience of the wider fleet. The remaining two ferries, the MV Claymore and MV Lochmor are expected to be ready by June and October next year. These will serve communities in Harris and North Uist. As well as the Turkish-built vessels, the MV Glen Rosa and MV Glen Sannox, both built at Fergusons Shipyard in Greenock will also join the CMAL fleet. As I stood on yet another absolutely packed short-formed ScotRail service from Edinburgh to Fife tonight, I reflected on the paradox of spending £116 million to reopen a few miles of railway and two stations in Fife, while spending precisely £ zero on new rolling stock to support the expanded timetable. The Fife Circle has had no investment in new rolling stock in the last 20 years, most of which comprises of legacy British Rail diesel units dating from the late 1980s. Short-formed trains have become increasingly common as the trains begin to show their age. The unit I had this morning had only 2 of the 4 sets of doors operable but did at least manage to continue its journey. In what now are the crucial first impressions for people trying out rail from Levenmouth and Cameron Bridge for the first time, perhaps having used private transport previously, hopefully the passenger experience will not be spoiled by overcrowded, short-formed services and the life-expired diesel units serving them. But at least the short-formed train I managed to squeeze onto tonight had pretty colours on it. 😐 #rail #customerexperience #modalshift

Overtaking is the single most dangerous thing we choose to do when we drive our cars on the road. For this reason, overtaking requires safe planning and execution. The Australian Road Rules restrict road trains to 90km/h in all States and Territories, except in Western Australia. Because Western Australia operates within the Road Traffic Code 2000, like all vehicles towing a trailer in WA, road trains are limited to 100 km/h. A car traveling at 110km/h, overtaking a 36.5 metre Double Road Train (or B-Triple) traveling at 100km/h requires 1481 metres and 49 seconds to safely and legally overtake when the speed limit is 110km/h. A car traveling at 110km/h, overtaking a 53.5 metre Triple Road Train traveling at 100km/h requires 1713 metres and 57 seconds to safely and legally overtake when the speed limit is 110km/h. Look for the signs and stay safe on WA roads. www.torquedriving.com.au

San Francisco has a range of public transit options, from BART to the iconic cable cars. And starting this week, the nation’s first hydrogen-fueled commercial passenger ferry will also be in the mix. “It’s all electric drive,” Joe Pratt, CEO of Zero Emission Industries, told Fast Company. “What that means is you don’t have the engine noise. You don’t have the vibration. It’s kind of like a really big sailboat that’s just cruising silently through the bay.” Pratt, whose company designed the boat, added that its sole byproduct is water vapor: “It’s the only vessel in the world where you can actually drink the exhaust.” Beginning Friday, the 70-foot catamaran, called the MV Sea Change, will take up to 75 passengers along the waterfront between Pier 41 and the San Francisco Ferry Building. Not only is the vessel innovative and eco-friendly, but it’s also free for the first six months as part of a pilot program. #ferry #transportation #publictransit #cleantransportation #catamaran #boat #electricdrive #hydrogen #hydrogenfueled #sustainability #sanfrancisco https://lnkd.in/e-cc7VWx
