Let’s talk living spontaneously and applying the creative process at work. I build video content pipelines for law firms. I love helping executives and creatives break the frame and unlock their potential.
Over 25 years of hiring, managing, partnering... I have found that one specific quality is far more important than anything else. Ownership. Give me an employee who takes ownership over their work, and I can handle any other challenge. Give me a partner who shares ownership with me over our business, our strategy, our employees, and I can make it work. Ownership means investment. When you are invested, you give me: Responsibility Problem-solving Persistence But let me be clear… your ownership doesn’t make my life smoother. It makes my life easier. Things that make my life smoother are your experience, your training, your emotional intelligence In my honest opinion, unless the work you do involves highly specialized knowledge (like brain surgery), experience and training are “nice to haves”. Give me an employee with 10 years experience and a degree, but no particular penchant towards ownership. Now give me another employee just switching professions after a new-parent career gap - no training, no experience. Employee A is going to be a smoother ride for me as a manager. I’m going to be able to talk less and assign more. I’m not going to have to check work as carefully. But for everything I assign Employee A, it’s me who will carry the weight of making sure it gets done. Solving problems? My burden. Adapting to unforeseen circumstances? My burden. Advocating for the customer, obtaining needed resources, working across the organization ALL MY BURDEN. Employee B is going to need more input early on, but every input I provide returns exponential value to the organization and to me as a manager. Same thing with a partner. And ultimately, the person who takes ownership over their work can take our company further than it could go without them. When I’m the only one who ultimately owns everything, we are limited by my abilities, insight, and perspective. When our company has many people taking ownership of their part, our potential expands to encompass the abilities, insight, and perspective of our whole team. So you can throw all the personality tests and rounds of interviews you want at the problem, for my money I’m mainly just looking for one thing: Ownership.

Here's the deal: your compensation is tied to the scope of your responsibilities and your relevant experience in doing so... not the years! In other words, if you have been a manager for 15 years without expanding your responsibilities and moving into a more senior role, your compensation will be in the manager and not the VP range. And vice versa, if you are continuously expanding your scope of work and taking on more responsibilities and mastering new skillsets, you can, and should, go for more senior roles with higher compensation. #knowyourworth #hiring

Here's how one Kansas City leader started attracting people to her organization: She treated her team member as a father and husband first. "Need to be the mystery reader at your kids elementary school?" - No problem. "Want to drop them off at school?" - No problem. "Got a hot date that you need a little extra time to get ready for?" - Here's some flowers to go with it. When you treat team members as human beings first (and not robots), amazing things happen. It's a pretty simple concept. #hiring #retention #employeeengagement
