One thing I appreciate most about our philosophy is the fact that relapse in and of itself does not automatically constitute an administrative discharge from our program but, highlights the need to address other factors in a higher level of care internally. It’s our job to re-create a healthy family system for our clients and foster an environment of secure attachment.

Starting your first job in the NHS is as exciting as it is nerve-wracking. Here are a few things I wish I was told when I started F1. 1️⃣ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤  It can be overwhelming when you are the first person to attend to an unwell patient. It’s easy to panic in these situations, but you always have time to take a deep breath and think through the most appropriate next steps. Help is never far away. 2️⃣ 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲  You will all experience that ‘Should I know this already?’ feeling when a senior says something that you don’t recognise. You may begin to worry that it’s something you really should know from medical school. There will be plenty of things you’ve never heard of - don’t let these accumulate, ask at the time and you won't forget it. 3️⃣ 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬  The word ‘professionalism’ will be ringing in your years when you start work. Though it is obviously important, the word has sterile connotations of formal, mundane interactions with your ‘colleagues’. In medicine, you have the pleasure of working alongside a vibrant and diverse group of people. Get to know them personally - everything is more fun when you are with your friends! 6 fast facts on hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (HBS): ➡️ HBS primarily impacts high-producing dairy cows in their first three months of lactation. ➡️ 80-100% of cows with HBS will die. ➡️ Most cows succumb within the first 48 hours of showing symptoms. ➡️ Even aggressive treatments are usually unsuccessful. ➡️ Survivors are likely to get HBS again. Today I attended day one of the annual Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals (MATCP) conference. Three things learned: 1. It was amazing connecting and reconnecting with colleagues and friends. We mingled… a good thing. 2. “Recovery capital” concepts should not only be included in assessments, assessment reports, treatment curricula, and treatment plans, but it’s also a smart way to think about the efficacy of systems. 3. The chemistry and creativeness of those marketing over-the-counter euphoria-producing supplements is pervasive and nearly impossible to stay ahead of.
