So many learnings from our Institute of Directors Ireland event yesterday evening for our CDir Network members, kindly hosted by Deirdre Ashe CDir, Bank of Ireland Insurance Services. Our experienced panel of speakers (Aongus Hegarty, Margot Slattery, Gavin Kelly, Deirdre Ashe and moderator Martin D. Shanahan) shared their insights on how Equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) starts at the top of the organisation. Learnings for me included: Being aware of unconscious bias. Get educated. Succession planning is key. Measure success. Language matters. Prepare for the Long-term. Boards must develop viable plans for the future and beyond.

TEAM ENDEAVOR - HSBC Business Case Competition 2024_Journey As we wrap up our adventure in this year's HSBC Business Case Competition 2024, it's a mix of relief and nostalgia for TEAM ENDEAVOR. We've been through it all together – from burning the midnight oil trying to crack those tough cases to the adrenaline rush of delivering our presentations. Starting from the intra rounds at North South University and making it to the national stage, every step pushed us to our limits. We had to think on our feet, collaborate seamlessly, manage our time, fine-tune our presentation skills, and gracefully handle those nerve-wracking Q&A sessions with the judges. I can't thank my teammates – MD Fahim, Muqaddim Noor, and Zarif Mahdir Rahman – enough. Their dedication and teamwork got us through the toughest challenges. Seriously, without them, I wouldn't be writing this reflection right now. Here's to more competitions and victories together! I would also like to thank Nurul Ahnaf Ihsas bhaiya and NSU Finance Club for creating an environment where we can have opportunities like this and showcase our best. Also, to those people who always believed in this team, to all of them, a big thank you. To anyone considering taking part in a competition like this, I say go for it. Helping Britain Prosper: 2014 - 2024   It’s been 10 years since the team at Lloyds Banking Group launched its corporate purpose - ‘Helping Britain Prosper’. Any corporate purpose that lasts that long must have something going for it. We were fortunate at Lloyds in having a blank piece of paper to redefine its North Star and ‘Helping Britain Prosper’ fitted the bank like a pair of well-loved slippers. We used it to reset the culture and was underpinned by publicly stated targets that supported UK plc, its people, communities and employees. It’s hard not to be proud of something that has proven its worth through the last decade, although I’m sure my colleagues are bored of me talking about it.   However, the world has changed and corporate purpose has come to mean something different for some. Can you recall 2019? It feels like a very long time ago. We’ve had wars, a pandemic and a cost-of-living crisis since but in that year it seemed as though the corporate world was on the cusp of a fundamental change. 181 CEOs of some of the world’s biggest companies signed up to a redefinition of a corporation that committed it to deliver value to stakeholders (not just shareholders) driven by a core purpose that served the needs of the many. In the UK, companies were having to report for the first time on how they are acting in the best interests of their employees, and to consider the impact of their operations on communities and the environment. All good stuff.   As pressure has built on business margins, the warm words and commitments of 2019 have taken a back seat. Corporate purpose - like ESG and acting for the benefit of ‘all stakeholder interests’ - has been drawn into the battlefield of woke and all its accompanying mudslinging. I hope the recent retrenchment is temporary. Establishing and defining a corporate purpose that reflects the culture and values of an organisation is as critical now as it ever was. We need the next generation of business leaders to be inspired and to inspire others. It starts with purpose that means something. #corporate comms #purpose

So, that’s a wrap! Last day at Rabobank! In April of this year, after 17yrs and four roles, I resigned from my role as GM for UK at Rabobank and today marks my last formal day with the Group. Joining as analyst in 2007 just as the financial crisis was unfolding, moving to corporate risk as European credits started to struggle before becoming the first European CRO and then the first British and permanent GM for the UK just as Brexit was made real - it has been quite a journey! At various points I have worked with, for and/or alongside some extraordinary people - there is genuine world class talent in the organisation, no question. I have also worked with a whole body of people who, without exception, are committed, dedicated and want to do well for themselves, their colleagues and the organisation as a whole. And I have yet to meet anyone, in any far flung part of the Group, who didn’t want our clients to succeed. Rabobank is not a ‘perfect’ organisation; such a thing does not exist. Like any human enterprise it has its own unique nuances but I have seen the Group change beyond recognition in my time here: it is a different organisation and a different bank. It has and is developing more leaders at every level. It has a singularity of purpose, identity and agenda. It continues to evolve, more consciously and deliberately than ever. I can honestly say that there will be no bigger cheerleader than me wishing it every success in the future for the simple reason that organisations like Rabobank, with their incredible pool of talent, knowledge and expertise, with their financial firepower and their global footprint have the tools to make a meaningful positive impact on the most pressing issues of the day and the future. I leave also, I hope, having contributed and given back at least as much as the organisation and it’s people have given me, and it has given me a lot. As you might imagine, I have a particular soft spot for the UK. It represents something special - our clients and stakeholders, the bankers, CITO, FEC, finance, HR, Risk (of course!), traders, legal, compliance, audit, everyone - the UK operation and the UK market brings a richness of talent, ability, mindset, diversity and energy that is truly unique. It was a real privilege to be a part of it and to represent them. Next steps? Well; I’m taking some proper time out! Time to reflect, to recharge, invest in ‘me’ a bit then decide where to focus the next chapter. There are still lots of things I want to do and I’m incredibly lucky in having a few very different opportunities to consider. First and foremost it’s time out with family, friends and probably sitting by a lake somewhere trying to catch ‘the big one’ whilst I think about the last few years and where all that hard earned experience can be best put to use. For now; a huge thank you to everyone I have worked with in whatever capacity over the years in my time at Rabo - you made it an incredible experience. 👏👏
