Today is #NationalInternDay & in honor of that, we wanted to shout our three amazing summer interns: Juliette Michaels, Trek Salzer & Haydn Sage! We asked them what being an intern at Nautilus Solar means to them & what their future #career goals are. Let's hear from them: Juliette: "I’m so grateful to be spending my summer as a small part of a great team that has gone out of their way to make me feel included and supported. I’m constantly inspired by the people around me, and their commitment to making a measurable difference in the world. I’m very interested in the intersectionality of community solar as an industry; driving growth in #sustainability and financial accessibility efforts. I know that supporting a mission I believe in is a priority for me as I move forward in my career." Trek: "As an intern at Nautilus, I get to be part of an *energetic* (pun intended) group of people working hard to make #solar energy accessible for people across the country. Going forward, I am looking to build a career in the renewable energy industry and I want to contribute to the continued global energy transition." Haydn: "Being an intern at Nautilus this summer has allowed me to gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of renewable energy. I am learning something new every day through the knowledge team and this experience has only deepened my passion for sustainability and renewable energy. Summer's not far off and our #internship program here at Greentech Renewables East is filling up fast! FLIPP Inc is seeking 3️⃣ additional renewable energy aligned Employer Partners to aid in the facilitation of its recently awarded $1,983,701 USDOL Building Pathways to Infrastructure Grant Program. FLIPP Inc developed the FACER Project under the USDOL’s Development Track; a PAID 3 week internship that incorporates and supports these core principles: 1. Strategies for ensuring DEIA, 2. Career pathways that lead to middle-high skilled employment and 3. Approaches for increasing job quality. This grant aims to develop and diversify the talent pipeline necessary to support the solar industry leading to a recognized postsecondary credential. That's a wrap for this summer's Intern/E&P Connection Mixer events! We are prepping to bring back out Topic Series Events!! Here are a few key takeaways from this summer: - Bright Future: We met many bright young students ready to take on challenges, tackle fieldwork, solve problems, and wear many hats as they enter the workforce. - Company Presence: Companies should reevaluate their presence at schools. Focus on what's impactful, build relationships with schools and students, and provide more opportunities for industry exposure. - University Visits: Don't just settle for an hour-long company advertisement. Offer more substance and discussions that highlight the industry and various career paths. - Connecting with Interns: Our industry needs to improve efforts in connecting with the next generation and making them feel welcome. Even interns can feel isolated, and we need to address that. - Dinner Discussions: The dinners in Houston and OKC were the highlights. Extending our events to include dinner with interns allowed us to share invaluable stories, insights, and takeaways. Coming in at number 2️⃣ for COVE's #YearInReview is how COVE is enabling the workforce of the future! By delivering programs that foster a skilled and knowledgeable workforce for the future, COVE is inspiring young minds to explore and pursue careers in the growing marine technology and sustainable energy industries and creating a pipeline for talent who want to work in marine tech and stay in Atlantic Canada. This year, COVE hired 23 students to work at 18 companies across the marine sector. COVE’s Internship Program aims to accelerate the marine workforce, bring new talents to workplaces, and help diversify the industry. The COVE Internship Program was proud to represent 77% of underrepresented groups, increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion across the industry. “While our COVE Internship Program is valuable to interns, it benefits employers just as much,” said Tanya Lush, Director of Workforce Development at COVE. “Internships have a very close return on investment (ROI) for companies. Employers are exposed to new ideas and technologies from some of the brightest minds in our nation's universities and colleges while building a talent pool that will return to the sector. Our educational programs are led to inspire the young minds of our future, and together, these initiatives will eventually create a full circle.” Another way COVE has enabled the workforce is by providing educational programs for school-age youth. For the first time, in partnership with OffshoreWind4Kids (OW4K,) COVE hosted the OW4K Interactive Showcase at two beaches in Nova Scotia this Summer, teaching youth how to build wind turbines. A first-of-its-kind program in Canada that promotes marine renewable energy education and awareness among youth, nurturing the next generation of leaders who will drive Canada’s transition to a net-zero future. Additionally, when the school year started, the OW4K program moved to classrooms across the province, providing the opportunity to 635 youth at 13 schools across six school boards. COVE’s latest initiative with OW4K is the OW4K Floating Wind Challenge, which is reserved for post-secondary students. The competition will assess their abilities to design and build floating structures that will support wind turbines, all while inspiring them to pursue careers in wind energy. The regional competition winner will receive an invitation to travel to Europe and compete in the international competition. Dear Network,  The last years first led me from my home city, Freiburg, to Reutlingen to the ESB Business School for my studies, then for my mandatory internship to Zurich and my semester abroad to Swansea. However, my summer internship brought me back home, to the black forest metropolis, Freiburg im Breisgau. The combination of spending my summer in one of the most beautiful and versatile cities with an internship that improved my skills and expanded my general knowledge was an enriching experience. My internship was in Management Consulting in the energy sector for Conloop GmbH. Nevertheless, the challenge of this new field, with its huge spectrum of aspects, made it exciting and gave me a new perspective.  This started by delving deep into energy research and staying updated with the latest legislation, which was exciting as the political impact was new to me.  Another aspect was facilitating pre-consulting and ensuring adequate documentation during workshops and JourFix meetings, which were fundamental for more specific research. The most urgent topic I worked on was the Municipal Heat Planning in German “Kommunale Wärmeplanung (KWP). Due to new laws and the given deadline, there was no commonly known summer hole, and my tasks regarding this topic were to present key insights on the basic regulations of the new law and associated legislation. With these, we prepared meetings for cities and energy suppliers, focusing on launching heat planning for cities and evaluating both the opportunities and challenges. This was connected to stakeholder mapping to offer a comprehensive perspective on key players in the field. Additionally, I  analysed existing heat plans categorised them for future initiatives, and crafted Excel charts to compile heat network data comprehensively. The second topic that made my start already intense was a transaction/M&A project for which I scoured Bisnode and company registers to identify potential enterprises for a utility company's expansion. Moreover, we compiled and presented the needed data on high-voltage grid enterprises, civil engineering & installation firms, and those specialising in documentation and permitting. Looking back, this internship gave me a holistic view of the energy sector's multifaceted dimensions, from in-depth research to hands-on project management. I am grateful for the experiences and the knowledge gained. I am keen to apply these insights in future endeavours! I am thankful for every connection I made, conversation, and event I joined that made our team spirit special. I want to thank my team Maik Wassmer, Andreas Döhrer (Doehrer), Jan Benning, Muhammed Emir Öztürk and Florian Schmidt for the support and great feedback that made me improve my skills and extend my knowledge.
