This article highlights the ever-growing need to assist our providers. Sadly, large enterprise health systems and even mid-size practices view scribes as an expense rather than an investment. Recently, the CMO of a large enterprise health system told me, "If I see a patient with six HCC renewals without a scribe, I can document and renew three. With a scribe, I can document and renew all of them. How much are you leaving on the table? The data is in, and your providers need help. Are you giving the money back to the payors rather than investing in your providers?

Most people identify with symptoms. Not problems. When it comes to business advice, someone at a distance can clearly see the problem while the person in the thick of it can only describe symptoms. It's the same reason it's easier to diagnose a friend's issues and not your own. Or critique another business and not your own. You can also think of it like this: When you go to the doctor, you describe the symptoms and they help you find the problem. (you don't go in and say you have the actual disease) In my experience, I've often been the problem... But it was impossible to see at the time. I was describing symptoms like: "I can't find good people" "I don't have enough time" When in reality, I hadn't built an attractive culture that high performers wanted to join. OR My personal systems sucked which meant I wasted time on things. The thing I've learned about giving advice and receiving it is both sides are often disconnected. One talks in symptoms. The other talks in problems/solutions. Understanding this has helped me self-diagnose things as well as reach out to others who might see things I don't.
