Earlier in my career, I marketed video games. There’s a subtle framing device all marketers in the industry would use which was essential to their campaigns: We made the player the hero. In Halo, you didn’t control Master Chief. →You were Master Chief. In Zelda, you didn’t play as Link. →You were Link. The game was merely the context by which you undertake your journey and realize your power. This framing is instructive and fundamental to marketing in general. People don’t buy products. They buy what they can become with products. Unfortunately, this concept is something I see B2B companies messing up all the time. When you’re trying to win customers, are you listing the features of your product or communicating how awesome someone can be when they use your product? Make the focus of your marketing the customer. They are hero. You are the vessel. #b2b #brand #positioning

𝙄 𝙗𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙎𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨 | Customer-centricity is my passion | I train Sales and Procurement teams to build winning B2B relationships.
When brands talk openly about their competition the below B2C study "found that the brand was viewed as “warmer,” meaning it was perceived as more friendly and trustworthy, after complimenting a competitor. It is this warmth that drives the favorable outcomes for the praiser—outcomes that include greater brand engagement and higher sales." Excellent research that should make us in the B2B space reflect on how we talk about our competition. Normally, we as sales professionals, avoid addressing "the elephant in the room" despite the fact that we all know the buyer's next best alternative to our solution. And we know that THEY know. Talking about our competition and what they do well sounds scary at first but helps to establish what we are all longing for in the B2B relationship with our customer: TRUST. ----------------------- Let's build bridges between #procurement and #sales.
When Nintendo launched the Switch gaming system, both Xbox and PlayStation took an unexpected step by publicly congratulating Nintendo on Twitter. Typically, brands refrain from praising their competitors to avoid giving them free publicity. However, the response was overwhelmingly positive, with the posts garnering a significant number of likes and retweets for Xbox and PlayStation, far exceeding their usual engagement. A recent study published in the Journal of Marketing delves into the impact of brands communicating positively toward their competitors, revealing that such actions can enhance a brand's reputation and drive sales. By appreciating those who challenge us, we foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. It’s a reminder that competition can be a positive force, encouraging us to colloborate at times, and to keep us agile, inspired, and continually driving towards excellence is a perspective that feels lost at times these days. #Collaboration #BrandGrowth #Perspective
