I did an in-person pitch to an American Billionaire as an African Founder. He didn't care about the features that made us different. Here are the things that got him to raise his head. 👇 Week 22 of building a $1m Fintech in East Africa (a series). TLDR - Name drop big time! Draw popular analogies, be likeable, teach them something surprising. Social proof: Social proof means a lot more than you think when results are minimal and in an ecosystem they know nothing about. If you can name-drop a large global institution you went to or worked for, DO IT !. Pattern Matching: Pattern matching is crucial; they literally have little to no context on the continent. Draw analogies to fast-growing famous startups they already understand, contextualize it & show them your unique market insight. Your moat: He cared little about what features I said differentiated us but instantly perked up his ears and wrote when I spoke about our unique approach as a startup with regard to GTM/User Retention. Be likeable: Whatever you do, don’t be a smart ass. You probably know more about what you are doing than they do. People invest in people more so than ideas.
