Today marks the first year anniversary of the new Kansas City International (KCI) Airport terminal. Thanks to Patrick Klein, I got to fulfill my Airport DREAM in a Big Way just before the Grand Opening of the new terminal last February. This VIDEO explains it all. P.S. I can’t figure out how to upload more than one video, so I’ll add the videos that complete my Airport Story in separate posts. #airports #airportlife #airportservices #airportsafety #airport #airportoperations #airportjobs #airportmanagement #southwestairlines #americanairlines #deltaairlines #kansascity

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners has approved a minimum of $400 million in private investment to construct a four-story cargo facility at Miami International Airport (MIA) that will be the first of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor, Miami-Dade County says: "This is great news for our community and our economy. MIA is our largest economic engine, generating thousands of jobs for our residents and significant income for many of our leading industries, from tourism to small businesses. MIA continues to increase its ranks among U.S. airports and worldwide regarding cargo volume. With the construction of this unprecedented, state-of-the-art air cargo facility now on track, sky is the limit for where MIA can lead the air cargo industry globally after consecutive record-breaking years in cargo growth since 2020." “This is the plan from which we will deviate.” We were in Juneau, Alaska, just about to embark on the Safari Endeavour, a 230' small ship carrying 84 passengers and 34 crew members. Our plans called for seven days of cruising through Southeast Alaska before returning to Juneau. The expedition lead had just asked if we’d all read the itinerary in the brochure. Several of us raised our hands. “Great,” he said, folding up the brochure and putting it away. “This is the plan from which we will deviate.” He explained that because our vessel was substantially smaller than other cruise ships docked next to it – like the 965’ Norwegian Jewel – they were able to maneuver in much tighter quarters. Our tour company also valued flexibility, so they acquired licenses to operate in numerous areas that would ordinarily be restricted. While we had a plan for the week, our captain would make changes to it based on “weather, whim, and whales” so that we could have the best experience the conditions allowed. This is the example I use when explaining organizational agility to people. Operating with agility doesn’t mean we don’t plan. We use planning to give ourselves options, not to create a sense of certainty. We make a plan, and we hold it lightly. We expect to deviate from it as things unfold. Operating this way may require developing organizational capability you don’t yet have. If it works for cruise ships, it can work for you.

The TSA continues to set records for most number of passengers screened. Boeing pleads guilty to fraud, but why would the DOJ -- with an abundance of evidence -- offer Boeing a plea deal to begin with? I have some clues, and also what it means to you. Are airfares actually starting to go down? And is Juneau the latest port that could restrict cruise ships? All this and answers to your travel questions on this week's Global Travel Update tomorrow, July 9th at 12 pm ET! I am absolutely captivated by the Boeing/Alaska Air accident and fallout. It seems like a real version of "The Front Fell Off." That being said, Alaska Air seems to be an absolute master in crisis PR. As someone who studied PR and started my career in PR, I really appreciate how transparent their messaging center is and how the statement from the CEO sounds sincere and apologetic without actually admitting any fault. Whoever is running their team is truly good at their job. Take a look: https://lnkd.in/gucCcXNN #publicrelations #crisiscommunications #crisismanagement

The Case of Captain Sully - In 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 struck a flock of geese shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Both engines were disabled, and Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger faced an impossible situation. With no time to reach another airport, Sully made the daring decision to land the plane on the Hudson River. All 150 passengers were evacuated before the plane sank. Sullenberger check the plane twice before evacuating himself. Leadership Lessons That We Can Pick Up From This Case: ⭐ Decisive Action: Sully didn't hesitate or panic. He assessed the situation quickly, considered his options, and made a decisive choice, even though it went against standard protocol ⭐ Calm Under Pressure: Despite the emergency, Sully remained calm and collected. This instilled confidence in the crew and passengers, reducing panic and facilitating a smoother landing ⭐ Clear Communication: Sully kept the crew and passengers informed throughout the ordeal, explaining the situation and issuing clear instructions. This transparency fostered trust and helped everyone coordinate their actions ⭐ Teamwork: Sully successfully landed the plane not just through his own skill, but also thanks to the coordinated efforts of the entire crew. He delegated tasks effectively and relied on the expertise of his co-pilot and flight attendants ⭐ Humility: After the successful landing, Sully deflected praise and highlighted the contributions of his team. This demonstrated his humility and leadership by example This real life incident showcases various leadership qualities that can be applied in different situations, from business to personal life. Leadership isn't always about grand gestures, but rather about making sound decisions, inspiring others, and fostering collaboration to achieve a common goal. #DrJaclynLee #LeaderMindset #CrisisManagement #CriticalThinking
