📜 “The #2030Agenda represents our collective vision for a better world. As we reaffirm our commitment to it in NY, we must also ensure that we are effectively communicating its value in improving lives to people at home, with #SDG16 at its core.... Amidst growing global polarization and distrust, we need to rebuild the social contract between people and the national and international institutions mandated to serve them. Failing on our promise to “#LeaveNoOneBehind” cannot be an option.” Excerpt from a powerful joint statement presented by Minister of State Ossian Smyth at the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications in the Government of Ireland this morning at #HLPF2024 on behalf of the Pathfinders member states, co-facilitated by Permanent Mission of Indonesia to the United Nations and the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations 📣! 🇮🇪🇮🇩 We are grateful for the support of colleagues John Gilroy and Sherley Mega Sandiori for facilitating this joint statement! 📖 Read the statement & watch on United Nations Web TV 📺: https://lnkd.in/erB4gYUA #SDGs #SDG16 #2030Agenda #PactOfTheFuture

Reflecting on an UNGA SDG Lounge event last week hosted by UN Partnerships. The introductory conversation with Guy Ryder--Under-Secretary General for Policy prompted me to think more deeply about the SDG framework. Addressing the question of whether the SDGs were overly ambitious to begin with, or whether there were there just too many crises that got in the way of achieving them, Mr. Ryder optimistically emphasized the progress that has been made in the name of the SDGs regardless of whether that progress was as much as we aspired to in 2015. He also observed that failures are easy to point out, while the successes often remain hidden. While I very much admire this positive perspective, there is more to consider. As they stand, the SDGs are holistic and all-encompassing. I worry, however, that their overly-ambitious nature hinders long-term engagement and enthusiasm. In other words, checking off one box gives us the motivation we need to tackle the next box, it's human nature, incentivization, behavioral science. We are likely to check 0/17 boxes by 2030. In reference to the SMART goal framework, the SDGs are Specific, Measurable, Relevant and Time-bound, but not Achievable. How will we reignite the global fire for sustainable development when it looks like its been snuffed out? Would drafting more achievable goals make success more visible and catalyze further progress? How can we do this in a way that isn't perceived as downgrading or admitting defeat thereby stifling enthusiasm further? https://lnkd.in/ex6cbRdE UN at NYU

How do we make our organizations fit for purpose amidst global challenges? How do we support positive change for our people and institutions? Laurel Patterson and Otto Scharmer are leading the effort to answer these questions through #sdgintegration. They are using the #infrastructure of connection to advance the #2030 agenda. Can’t wait to listen in. #presencing #idgs #undp #2030agenda
Part of our work advancing #SDGintegration focuses on building infrastructures of connection. 📍 This is important, because realizing transformative change requires a fairly significant shift in attention from the “what” to the "how" of sustainable development. 🌿 This is the emphasis in the United Nations Secretary General UN 2.0 | United Nations ambition - characterized by renewed investments in a forward-thinking culture and skills suited for today’s interconnected, evolving risk landscape. 💡 How do we cultivate the conditions for this profound change? 🌏 I hope you can join us during UN 2.0 | United Nations week for an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion with Otto Scharmer and United Nations leaders working together so that we can be more effective contributors of systems change. 📍 Come hear more about how UNDP is co-creating spaces for collective enquiry through our #integrator mandate, and how United Nations leaders in our current initiative are cultivating conditions for change in their entities. 📅 24 April 12 noon - 1pm EST 👉 https://lnkd.in/eUj9BNa3 Otto Scharmer Kersten Jauer David Bearfield Paul Anderton Iina Paarma Sophia Robele Antoinette Klatzky Kelvy Bird Martin Kalungu-Banda Dorian Baroni Talea von Lupin

Research Director & Deputy Director at SEI | Adjunct Professor at LiU | Chair of Swedish Climate Policy Council
Interested to hear how others view the post-2030 agenda for sustainable development - what are the big ideas out there? What was said at UNGA week? Thanks again to Francesco Fuso Nerini Kungliga Tekniska högskolan for taking the initiative to the commentary summarized below.
This year’s United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) showed ongoing commitment but highlighted a continued lack of progress. With only six years left, it’s clear that more work is needed to achieve the SDGs within the established timeline. A new commentary published in Nature Magazine and co-authored by SEI Research Director and Deputy Director Åsa Persson suggests extending the objectives to 2050. This extension would enable the setting of interim targets for 2030 and 2040, alongside goals for 2050, all aligned with science and maintaining ambitious, yet achievable, global objectives. Extending Agenda 2030 to 2050 should not be seen as merely prolonging the deadline but as a renewed commitment that: 🎯 Sets clear goals 🤝 Fosters collaboration 🗳️ Guides policy decisions ⚛️ Promotes innovation 🧑⚖️ Enhances accountability 📈 Monitors SDG progress Strengthening the Agenda 2030 was one of the commitments in the Pact for the Future at the Summit of the Future, and it should remain a priority beyond the summit. ⏩ Tracking the Global SDG Progress: 5 Key Takeaways The global Sustainable Development Report (SDR) has been tracking the performance of all UN member states on their SDG progress since 2016. This year, SDR highlights five key findings: ❗ Only 16% of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030. The remaining 84% shows limited progress or reversal of progress. 📈 The pace of SDG progress varies significantly across country groups. Nordic countries lead on SDG achievement, BRICS countries make significant progress while poor and vulnerable nations lag behind. 💹 Long-term investment is a major challenge in accelerating sustainable development. 🤝 Global cooperation is key to addressing global challenges. Barbados ranks the highest in its commitment to UN-based multilateralism; the United States ranks last. 🌾 SDG targets related to food and land systems are particularly off-track. Are you surprised by the findings? Which SDG goals have your organization been addressing? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
