🔢 The urbanization of Sub-Saharan #Africa is characterized by: 🏘️ 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: Many of the policies and plans, such as outdated plot sizes, laid out during colonial times, still contribute to the present-day challenge of affordable housing. 🏭 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Efforts to address urban growth post-independence were hampered by building commercial sectors and an inability to execute planning functions. ⛔ 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: Cities in Sub-Saharan Africa face a population increase, which outpaces economic development or better living standards. 💰 #𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Rapid urbanization has widened the gap between the demand and supply of affordable housing. High costs and inadequate housing mean many urban dwellers are forced into informal settlements. 📑 Download the full report by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)’s Paula Sevilla Núñez now! 🔽 https://lnkd.in/e-YdmVsE #SDG16Plus #HousingJustice #LeaveNoOneBehind #HousingForAll #SDG11 #SustainableDevelopment

🚀 If you consider the rapid urbanization in Africa, the consequences might not be immediately apparent. The projected urban population growth by 2050 in Africa suggests the need to build around 110 Nairobi-sized cities to accommodate this surge. This looming reality poses significant challenges that cannot be ignored, as this article paints a picture: https://lnkd.in/d6B6-_JX 💣 The escalating urbanization could lead to heightened urban conflicts due to the increasing demand for public goods and services that are currently inadequately met by governments. Urban protests and political mobilization are likely to be driven by socio-economic issues, rather than ethnic or regional divides. Are our current governance and service delivery models equipped to handle this impending urban transformation? 🚨 A proactive approach is essential to prevent cities from descending into dystopian scenarios. Urban authorities like Sakaja Johnson and Robert Alai, built environment professionals from the Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) and KENYA INSTITUTE OF PLANNERS, development cooperation partners such as The World Bank and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) as well as urban residents represented by SDI. (Slum Dwellers International) (SDI) and Boniface Mwangi, need to collaborate now to plan for the challenges ahead. It's crucial to mitigate the negative consequences of rapid urbanization and pave the way for a #sustainable and #just urban future.

🌱 Niger State Urban Policy: A Blueprint for Sustainable Urbanization We are pleased to highlight the Niger State Urban Policy (NSUP), developed with the support of the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). Despite numerous advantages and opportunities, this state in Nigeria faces many development challenges. The NSUP aims to transform these challenges into opportunities by strengthening rural-urban connections, promoting social equity, addressing climate and socio-economic issues, and fostering sustainable growth. This policy sets a benchmark for other states to follow. 🔗Acess the policy here: https://lnkd.in/dH9fZ-tD #UrbanDevelopment #SustainableCities #NigerState #UNHabitat #UrbanPolicy #Sustainability #SmartCities #InclusiveGrowth #ClimateAction #UrbanResilience #UNHabitat_PLGS Antonio Kipyegon Kinyanjui Michael Remy Sietchiping Anne Amin

Urban informality in the Global South. Justice, equity, inclusion. Housing, climate, communities. Views expressed are my own.
Africa’s housing deficit–both qualitative and quantitative–is severe, with 60-90% of the population living in informal, substandard housing. Africa’s population is estimated to reach 3 billion by 2050 and 80% of the buildings that will exist in the region by that time are yet to be built. Of these, nearly 90% will be residential. Considering that 50% of the most climate vulnerable countries worldwide are in Africa, these homes MUST be climate and disaster resilient--and constructed using resilient materials and methods--if we have any hope of meeting climate change targets and saving lives. Governments and other stakeholders need significant financial, technical and policy support to meaningfully address the needs of billions of Africans for safe, adequate housing. Solutions exist, but must be supported with adequate financing and policy frameworks to reach the scale required to effect transformative change. #ResilientHousing #Housing4All #AdequateHousing4All
Africa is driving global urbanization 📈 But as urbanization in Africa accelerates, so does the demand for housing. Cities are already facing challenges around housing affordability, availability and adequacy with many people living in unsuitable conditions or informal settlements because of these challenges. With cities growing rapidly, it's crucial to address the housing squeeze such as in improving housing supply, access to financing, and housebuilding innovation to ensure access to affordable, safe housing for all. #Housing #HousingForAll #HousingAffordability #Africa #Urbanization (source: https://loom.ly/6DS-AO0)

Advancing Resilient Housing & Sustainable Construction in Africa's Informal Settlements | Thursday 5 September @ 5:30pm EAT, Room AUF3 Affordable, resilient housing is critical for the future of African cities. As we've already heard today from one speaker after another, African cities will need to accommodate up to 800 million new inhabitants between now and 2050. This will not only require significant resources, but significant and critical shifts in housing systems, policies and programs. Join us at the first inaugural #AfricaUrbanForum to discuss solutions and strategies to increase access to resilient, affordable housing for Africa's urban poor. Nigeria’s urbanisation is progressing rapidly, with 54% of the population now living in urban areas. This growth brings challenges like a housing deficit and inadequate infrastructure, but there is hope. In Chisom Udora’s latest insight, she discusses how infrastructural development can drive economic growth, improve living standards, and address urban challenges through reforms and investments. #Ataleoftwocities#Spatialjustice#Urbanplanningke#NaiNiyaWho Instead of offering a quick fix, I propose a more critical approach to the heated debate on densifying Nairobi's previously low-density neighbourhoods. Zooming out, we can examine the city's overall socio-morphological structure and its historical dynamics. Nairobi's planning instruments heavily reflect its colonial foundation, with zoning based on racial segregation. Post-colonial Nairobi inherited and improvised upon these tools, unintentionally perpetuating the same socio-spatial inequalities we see today. With this understanding, we can engage in a more holistic conversation that aims to bridge the city's spatial divides. This conversation should avoid romanticizing the colonial past or simply replicating past planning failures in the remaining "good" neighbourhoods. The challenge lies in balancing diverse interests, accommodating migration, and co-planning just and sustainable futures for all. This is the true question: Whose Nairobi should we be planning for? Nai ni Ya Who?
