☁️ How does the #ClimateCrisis create injustice and lead to #displacement? 🌊 Factors including disasters like cyclones and floods, slow-onset climate dynamics, exploitation, evictions, and conflicts over land rights can all lead to injustice and displacement. 🗂️ Current frameworks must address multi-causal displacement, which leaves many lacking protection and support. 🔍 Find out more in our Non-Resident Fellow Stacey Cram’s latest blog 🖇️ https://lnkd.in/gfQ-3Njc #SDG16Plus #AccessToJustice #JusticeForAll #SustainableDevelopment

⛈️ The #ClimateCrisis can deepen injustice and #displacement in several ways: 🌊 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀: Wildfires have put millions of homes at risk. Cyclones and floods can create immediate humanitarian and #justice needs, leading to displacement. Slow onset climate dynamics can trigger more permanent movement over time. 🏠 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Displacement can result from traffickers exploiting vulnerable climate populations or forced evictions under harsh conditions. ⚡ #𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀: #JustTransitions can create justice challenges by failing to use a people-centered approach. These projects can unintentionally lead to mass evictions and conflicts over land rights. 🔗 Learn more about the connection between #ClimateChange, #justice, and displacement ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gfQ-3Njc #SDG16Plus #AccessToJustice #JusticeForAll #SustainableDevelopment

When we look at the causes and impacts of mega-storms, saying that our cities "aren't designed for this” is true. But climate change isn’t the only factor to blame for submerged highways and flooded homes. City planning and traditional infrastructure have a huge impact on how we cope with a deluge. 🌍💧 Water Wars Are On the Rise – But We Already Have a Solution The Pacific Institute’s Water Conflict Chronology (https://lnkd.in/e_bF_DVg) reveals a troubling trend. More than 1,630 water-related conflicts have been recorded over the past three decades, with a sharp increase in recent years. Attacks on civilian water infrastructure and violence associated with water scarcity worsened by droughts, climate disruptions, growing populations, and competition for water are becoming all too common. 🌊🚨 But here's the thing: we already have the technology to prevent these conflicts. Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) can extract clean, drinkable water from the air, providing a sustainable solution for regions with water shortages. 🌿💧 It’s time to prioritize this innovation and ensure access to clean water for everyone, everywhere. Let’s shift the focus from conflicts to solutions! By creating public demand for the widespread implementation of AWGs, we can address water scarcity, promote global peace, and build a future where no one has to fight over water. 💡🌍 ▶️ Free Water for Everyone | Moses West ↙️ https://lnkd.in/e_FKaQi7 #WaterSecurity #SustainableSolutions #AtmosphericWaterGenerator #GlobalPeace #InnovationForGood #WaterForAll #EndWaterWars #ClimateAction

🌍💔 Low-income households are on the front lines of climate change, facing the harshest impacts despite contributing the least to emissions. As floods and extreme weather become more frequent, affordable housing in high-risk areas is increasingly threatened. Earlier this week at JCU, Professor Jon Nott, Professor Bob Wasson, Dr. Han She Lim, and Iain Brown shed light on the 2023 Barron River Flood, sparking crucial conversations on climate challenges and community resilience. Here’s what we learned: 1️⃣ Climate change isn't a distant threat; it has already increased the chances of large rain events that can cause major flooding. 2️⃣ Local planning is lagging behind, leaving the community vulnerable as we plan based on historical records rather than future risks. 3️⃣ Infrastructure approaches like levee banks must be approached with caution, especially in areas vulnerable to both riverine and coastal flooding. 4️⃣ JCU is working independently on updated flood modelling, offering hope for smarter planning. Voices in the audience echoed a call for accountability and decisive action. It's a wake-up call for our leaders and our community.

With climate impacts like coastal flooding, sea level rise, and extreme weather on the rise, it’s no surprise that that coastal resilience funding from the Inflation Reduction Act is already in huge demand, with a recent call for proposals from NOAA generating $16 billion in requests across 869 proposals. But House Republicans are advancing legislation in a markup today that would rescind $700 million for coastal resilience from the Inflation Reduction Act, including $390 for tribal priorities. Many of HR 7408's cosponsors are representing places–from the Gulf, Atlantic, and Pacific coasts–that are receiving this funding and reaping the benefits for their environment & economies. More communities deserve the same. We joined 60 organizations urging Congress to reject Rep. Westerman’s egregious attempt to rescind these critically needed funds. We need #OceanClimateAction, not climate denial.

Appreciate this blog and the attention to this issue! Need to also include the injustice/displacement that occurs from clean energy and green mineral extraction. In the rush to make money on new trends in climate change mitigation, community and indigenous rights are often trampled upon. It’s a delicate balance, but new green economies also have to be cognizant of inherent, structural injustices so as not to exacerbate them.
