There's nothing incognito about it. Your sneaking suspicions have finally been confirmed. Chrome Incognito mode actually does track users in private mode. While many of the tech savvy already know this, Incognito for the masses will never be the same again. Most of us aren't big on reading or even noticing disclaimers or terms of service. In this case, however, the updated disclaimer when you open an incognito window provides a certain degree of enlightenment. The reality is those private modes in web browsers do prevent some data from being stored on your device, but they don't prevent tracking by websites or internet service providers. Having said that, private or incognito mode can be confusing and even misleading depending on, um, what you're searching for. If you're wondering why the change, it has something to do with Google preparing to settle a class-action lawsuit that accuses the firm of privacy violations related to Chrome's Incognito mode. That you can search for publicly unless you have privacy issues. In that case, stick to your VPN https://lnkd.in/gNG9Ybca #google #internet #privacy #googlechrome #browsers

Google got caught with their hand in the cookie jar...again. Google Chrome's incognito mode is supposed to not track your activities, letting you browse the web anonymously (at least as far as the browser is concerned). But it turns out that Google, who makes money primarily off of advertising and your data, was secretly collecting "billions of data records", a 2020 class-action lawsuit determined last month. Google has agreed to delete the data. They also agreed to update their incognito splash page to " will explicitly state that Google collects data from third-party websites “regardless of which browsing or browser mode you use,” and stipulate that “third-party sites and apps that integrate our services may still share information with Google". The bottom line is that incognito mode isn't completely private nor anonymous. If you're worried about privacy, then you need to use more privacy-respecting browsers such as DuckDuckGo...and use a VPN.

The vast majority of us have no idea what the padlock icon on our internet browser is – and it’s putting us at risk Do you know what the padlock symbol in your internet browser’s address bar means? If not, you’re not alone. New research by my colleagues and I shows that only 5% of UK adults understand the padlock’s significance. This is a threat to our online safety. The padlock symbol on a web browser simply means that the data being sent between the web server and the user’s computer is encrypted and cannot be read by others. Not understanding symbols like the padlock icon, can pose problems to internet users. These include increased security risks and simply hindering effective use of the technology. Findings corroborate research by Google itself, which in September, replaced the padlock icon with a neutral symbol described as a “tune icon”. In doing so, Google hopes to eradicate the misunderstandings that the padlock icon has afforded. As a minimum, we need web browser companies to join forces in a concerted effort to shield users, or at the very least, heighten their awareness regarding potential online risks. This should include formulating one unified design across the board that affords an enriched and safe user experience. #LetsBeCarefulOutThere #flcc270 https://lnkd.in/ecAzQCZi

Google has announced a new way to further protect its privacy-minded users who are browsing using Google Safe Browsing, which is a Google Search setting that warns users when they may be entering a potentially dangerous site. For most of its existence, Safe Browsing has worked by discovering unsafe sites and adding them to a list, so that when a user tries to visit a site, it first checks if the site is on that list and warns the user if it is. However, the list is only updated every 30 to 60 minutes, while most unsafe websites today have a shorter lifespan than that, which allows them to avoid detection long enough to get people to click on them. With the latest update, Google is introducing real-time protection to the Standard protection mode. https://lnkd.in/dsPDSgKZ
