Sea Mar Community Health Centers is a pioneer in Washington state for crisis mental health services! In December 2023, Sea Mar started its 3rd co-responder program with first responders. This program partners with Clark County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) and deputies are partnered with mental health crisis workers to respond to calls involving community members in crisis who have an underlying behavioral health issue. Some examples of such calls are when someone is having a psychotic episode, someone who is suicidal, or someone experiencing a traumatic experience like domestic violence. When our co-responders arrive on scene, they provide de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed interventions with the goal of diverting the situation from hospitalization or incarceration, and connecting the individual with ongoing treatment and support to ensure the crisis doesn’t re-occur. The program is in its early months but has seen approximately 16 calls per month and we expect that number to increase as deputies become more familiar with utilizing this partnership. The average response time from initial phone call to arrival on scene is 30 minutes. The program is currently funded by Carelon and will see additional funding this summer from Mental health sales tax funds. “We are so happy to be able to provide this service to the community. We get to help people in their worst moments to feel empowered and cared for. We are also able to help deputies feel more effective and less alone.” – Laura Nichols Sea Mar BH Program Manager https://lnkd.in/grTE5Xtu

Mental health is one of those “silent” and “unseen” issues. Not only in the community but also in the workplace. It is okay to say you are not okay, but it is even more difficult when one cannot even realize there is something deeper going on. It is not an illness, but it can do greater harm not only to one self but their loved ones and peers as well. I am glad this is being addressed more now than ever. It is not being glossed over, hidden or being covered by mere medications. #mentalhealthawareness #communitywellbeing #preventingsuicides
Community mental health needs addressed Broken Arrow Police and Fire Departments are taking a collaborative approach to resolving emergency situations for people suffering from mental health and substance abuse issues. Beginning July 1, care coordinators from Family & Children's Services and GRAND Mental Health will be embedded with first responders. "Embedding these care coordinators in both our agencies will help because they can connect our citizens with the needed services,” Maj. Stephen Garrett, BAPD, said at the City Council meeting on June 16. The need is great. Last year, the departments received 590 mental health crisis calls. Specifically, there were 301 residents taken into emergency protective custody, 92 overdoses, and eight suicides. For more, go to https://lnkd.in/gPj7Fp9A

Kaiser Family Foundation report, "Mental Health in America" states that 51% of all adults - 131,733,000 - in the United States report a family member has experienced a severe mental health crisis. https://lnkd.in/gB-ePrrc I wonder what happened to these individuals when they were in crisis. Did they get the help they needed? Were they treated with respect? Did they encounter law enforcement? Were they hospitalized? Could their crisis been averted if they had access to a resource such as 988, a mobile crisis response team or a crisis stabilization unit where they could quickly and safely get the help they needed. #988 #mobilecrisis #mentalhealth #suicideprevention #SUDtreatment

This an absolute Blockbuster article 80% of IMPD runs are likely MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Less than 40% of officers have crisis intervention training because it's VOLUNTARY, despite IMPD claims that most are trained IMPD doubled its Mobile Crisis Assistance Team (MCAT) that handles mental health calls to a total of 9 officers for a city of almost 900,000 Some have been killed in encounters with officers not equipped to handle mental health issues on the streets The takeaway is that non-police solutions must be sought and funded to safely address mental health issues in Indianapolis https://lnkd.in/gBBjCw5e
Despite changes, mental health responses still fall to IMPD

Engaged in national advocacy to increase equitable access to healthcare for marginalized communities at low or no/cost via universal mobile medicine.
Sharing this link to KFF's Mental Health in America survey, which highlights how pervasive mental crisis events are, how complex they are, and how they are one of the worst things that can happen in a family. My heart breaks for these families. KFF CEO Drew Altman writes more in the essay. As you read, consider 25% of 342 million people is 85 million people... - 28% of Americans say they or their family had to take a painful step like institutionalizing a family member because they were a threat to themselves or others. - 21% say they or a family member had a drug overdose requiring an ER visit. - 14% say they or a family member ran away from home and lived on the streets due to mental health issues. - 16% say a family member experienced homelessness because of a mental health problem. - 8% say they or a family member had a severe eating disorder requiring hospitalization or in-person treatment. - 26% say they or a family member engaged in cutting or self-harm behaviors - 16% had a family member who died from suicide. This a complex crisis for millions of individuals, and as Drew says, "multiplies manifold" as it affects families. Every chance you get, advocate your elected officials for more and better mental health services for your state.
In his latest column, KFF President and CEO Drew Altman explains that while there are inadequate services for families dealing with mental illness generally, there are even fewer services and supports for the families dealing with crisis events. “Ultimately, the best thing we can do for families experiencing a mental health related crisis is to more effectively address the underlying problem affecting their family member.”

Let’s hope NYS Governor Hochul’s $1 billion State of the State Proposal to Improve Mental Health becomes action. It proposes to : 1) Open 200 New Psychiatric Inpatient Beds under Multi-Year Expansion Plan 2) Establish Law Enforcement and Mental Health Coordination Team and Funds Crisis Intervention Training for Law Enforcement 3) Improve Mental Health Admission and Discharge Procedures for Hospitals 4) Fund Mental Health Court Expansion and Court-Based Mental Health Specialists 5) Increase Transitional Housing and Specialized Housing 6) Fund New Community-Based Mental Health Teams
“Too often, the people involved in violent incidents on our streets and in our subways are victims themselves—victims of a system that has failed to provide them the treatment they need." – Governor Kathy Hochul Holistic, robust mental health care is vital for public safety. Thank you, Governor Hochul, for recognizing that by prioritizing mental health care across the state this year. We're pleased to see measures like expanding mental health courts to address the underlying causes of justice involvement mentioned in today's State of the State Address. https://lnkd.in/eKdr2dbW #SOTS24

A roundtable on preventing youth suicide was held last week at The Village for Families & Children in Hartford with Governor Lamont and providers from across the state. As this Hartford Courant article highlights, Connecticut’s strong youth crisis response system includes 24/7 Youth Mobile Crisis Services and new Urgent Crisis Centers: https://loom.ly/gM3Jc_w However, more investment is needed across the entire behavioral health system to prevent crises. As Connecticut Child Advocate Sarah Eagan said at the event, "The measure of success is when every child or parent gets the help they need at the time they need it." We can ensure all Connecticut kids and their families can get the support they need - before, during, and after a behavioral health crisis - by increasing investment in the youth mental health system across the full range of providers and services. #CTPolicy #SuicidePreventionMonth #ChildrensMentalHealth #MedicaidRates
Youth suicides are rising in CT. Mental health advocates and providers offer ways to help.
