This year's EdWeek Market Brief Summit will feature great content -- on how school districts make curriculum choices, the impact of decision-making "silos" in school districts, and meaning of this fall's state and federal elections for K-12, and much more. But one particular highlight will be the interactive, hands-on workshops we're staging to help attendees from education companies improve at their craft, and improve their organizations. One of those leading this year's sessions is Collin Earnst, a longtime education executive who now leads the Ed-tech Leadership Collective. One of Collin's workshops will help education company employees self-assess their skills and figure out if they're on a trajectory that will take them to the C-suite. Another workshop he leads will help company execs identify employees with executive potential and guide them on an upward path. It's great, practical advice for attendees at different places in their professional journeys. Mark it down: Nov. 13-15, in Denver. (Photo by AP) https://lnkd.in/e5fi69Se

Strong growth requires more than just potential — it also takes ambition, commitment, and lots of hard work. Why, then, are APs so often overlooked when it comes to their capacity to perform as transformational school leaders? In a recent article, the Wallace Foundation delves into how system leaders can cultivate the leadership skills of APs, who are closer to the principal role than any other leader in the school building and possess tremendous potential for delivering educational equity for students. https://lnkd.in/gAze8DDK

Toward Culturally Responsive Instructional Leadership from Structured Critical Self-Reflection (CRILS) ABSTRACT This study analyzes a principal preparation course structured by Culturally Responsive School Leadership (CRSL) and critical educational leadership research. Introducing CRILS (Culturally Responsive Instructional Leadership Structured by critical self-reflection), the methodology aims to humanize school experiences for Black and racially minoritized students. Through qualitative inquiry, including interviews and analysis of racial autobiographies, the study found that critical self-reflection helped participants recognize biases and confront negative emotional responses. CRILS extends CRSL by incorporating lessons from pre-Brown practices and emphasizes reflective practices among all school-affiliated adults to foster student learning and guidance opportunities.

This week and next, The Difference are thrilled to be delivering the third round (out of six) of sessions for our Inclusive Leadership Course (ILC). Over these two weeks, we’ll be focusing on trauma-informed practice and the compassionate minds approach, exploring how these concepts can be implemented strategically to drive whole-school improvement and improve relational practice in schools. 📍 Where we are delivering This week: Thursday in Derbyshire and Friday in Newcastle Next week: Tuesday in Corby, Wednesday and Thursday in London Our sessions will support nearly 200 school leaders in understanding how to: 1️⃣ Embed trauma-informed practices as part of a broader school strategy. 2️⃣ Develop staff emotional literacy to support students effectively. 3️⃣ Foster environments that validate and regulate children’s emotions during everyday interactions. This work is about more than just theoretical ideas, it’s also about equipping leaders with practical tools to create schools where all children, families and staff feel like they belong and can thrive. The sessions will be delivered by me and our brilliant ILC facilitators – Sam Morrow, Oludolapo Irene Ogunseitan, Shaun Brown, and Alice Bryant FCCT. If you’d like to know more about the Inclusive Leadership Course or how your school, trust, or local authority could join the next cohort in September, feel free to reach out.

Insights from the Annual Report💡 “Every year, the Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) accepts 30 promising government and nonprofit leaders from Chicago and Cook County into a rigorous, interdisciplinary six-month leadership development program. During the program, CLA fellows engage with renowned faculty from UChicago and beyond, challenging fellows to analyze organizational best practices, community impact, and institutional reform. Expanding the reach of the classroom, fellows also participate in a Civic Practitioner Leadership series with CLA alumni. The alumni discuss issues facing our city, as well as how they’ve used their CLA network and experience to grapple with leadership challenges. Fellows further challenge their view of civic leadership with the intensive, week-long global practicum in Paris. There, fellows engage with and learn from their counterparts, developing a more global and nuanced understanding of civic leadership and social challenges. Each CLA cohort cultivates a community of civic leaders with a wide variety of professional and lived experiences, inviting fellows to debate and study some of the most polarizing public policy issues in Chicago. Through this dedication to uplifting a variety of perspectives, and its insistence on avoiding superficial answers, CLA fuels discussion and exchange of ideas, catalyzing improvement in practices and civic outcomes.” Want to read more? My wife looked at me CRAZY when I told her THIS: I change my curriculum EVERY year after the first class for my 2 week Leadership Accelerator. She's a 15 year veteran in the teaching space so she knows her stuff... You might look at me crazy too... and that's fine. I do this because I gauge the focus and interests of my students and be relevant to what they are interested in.... Rather than what I want to teach them around leadership. I had an AMAZING time working with these Rutgers Future Scholars 11th graders teaching a leadership class. They challenged me They pushed me They developed me Class time isn't about just spewing the information we have in our heads. It's about thinking creatively on how we can best drive messages home that impact will impact our clients. This was an exercise created to show scholars the value of calculated bets. They all shot from different places and received more points the further they shot. Some strategized close shots and scored the highest... while others shot long distance and were able to win. We all have to keep shooting no matter where we are in life and put up shots!! I take the same energy when working with my college students! Are you planning impactful workshops for your students this year around professional development? SLIDE IN MY DM! I LOVE conducting workshops around building a personal brand that adds value and that gains attention. I do this work because it was done for me and I have reaped the benefits of being INTENTIONAL in branding for opportunities. I have a few slots left for the fall and would love to help your students stand out in the marketplace!!

SPS is bridging opportunity gaps to give ALL students the opportunity to live their best life. 94% of students graduate on time, including multilingual learners. Many districts expect the graduation rate for multilingual learners to be lower...making excuses instead of opportunity. So proud of SPS.
DISTRICT OF DISTINCTION: Spokane Public Schools has been honored as one of just six school districts in the country as a 2024 “District of Distinction." SPS was awarded for excellence in providing access and opportunity to all students, an initiative that had significant impact on student success, engagement and overall educational achievement. “Our staff works hard every day to ensure that each student feels a sense of belonging and is supported in achieving their dreams," said Superintendent Dr. Adam Swinyard. "I'm proud that their work is being recognized by the national educational community through this award." SPS received this recognition from the District Administration Leadership Institute, a national pre-K12 organization dedicated to advancing educational leadership, ensuring that the nation’s schools are equipped with the visionary guidance needed to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape. Its magazine District Administration is the most widely received and read publication for school district-level leaders nationwide. Learn more about the continuing work of Spokane Public Schools to fulfill our commitment that every student has a dream, access and opportunity for a happy and successful future at spokaneschools.org/equity. #SPSPromise
