Reflecting on the recent #NARNXT conference. The theme that resonated with me was "Quality Over Quantity". 🧐 Walking through the exhibit hall, I noticed a shift this year. Unlike last year's bustling crowd, the hallway was packed with focused, confident agents and brokers, while the booths were less crowded. It seemed to me that those who ventured into the booths were looking forward, searching for ways to future-proof their companies. Those who stayed away seemed more hesitant, perhaps fearing the cost of change and what it could mean for their businesses. As a broker myself, I understand these concerns. In times of change, the safe route can often seem the most appealing. But let me tell you something - progress is not born from playing it safe. 🚀 I predict a shift in our industry over the next few years. We won't just see more agents; we will see better agents. Ahead of this week’s Collision conference in Toronto I spoke with my Cogcast co-host Larissa Padden on what to expect, the media in attendance and how companies can get involved. Larissa asked about differences between the US and Canadian media, a question I often get having been a reporter on both sides of the border. Listen here: https://bit.ly/3KFDnOf In a nutshell: ·            Collision is one of the biggest tech conferences. This year about 40K in attendance (journalists, tech companies, investors, marketers). It's Toronto’s final year hosting. Next year it’ll be a month earlier in Vancouver. ·            Ways businesses will be involved (through sponsorships, exhibits, speaking through panels, fireside chats, roundtables etc. and pitching investors) ·            Over 1,000 journalists in attendance. Mainly top tier and trade tech reporters from the US and Canada: Bloomberg, Financial Times and the Globe and Mail but also newer media platforms like Semafor. There will be podcast hosts, broadcasters, newsletter curators and some reporters will be live blogging and streaming ·            Discussions largely around AI but some sessions fall within the larger realm of tech and fintech topics like machine learning and embedded finance ·            Advice on how to succeed with event media? Pitch about 2.5-3 weeks in advance. Follow up. If you wait until the last minute, we've heard a number of reporters say they're already fully booked. Canada vs US media: - Canada’s Online News Act or Bill C18, somewhat of a controversial bill that came into effect last year makes it hard to get news out of Canada through social media. That combined with shrinking ad dollars, diminishing referral traffic because of emerging changes like Google’s AI summaries are threats to the business model. - The spread of misinformation and closure of local news outlets are challenges shared with the US. - Same PR principles apply: understand the country's media landscape, build relationships with reporters, keep pitches short etc. If you’re at Collision this year, I’m here too.
