Did you know there are three different types of nonprofit organizations? They are charitable organizations, churches and other religious organizations, as well as private foundations. Let’s discuss charitable organizations. They come in all different sizes and shapes, and all different types of missions. They're anywhere from less than $100,000 a year in revenue to in the billions. Yes, in the billions. Their mission is just as varied. It can be animal rescue, senior services, education, food for underserved families, workforce readiness.... the missions are endless. One way to get to know a nonprofit is to go to their open houses. 🌟The Uncharitable Movie is such a critically important film that I encourage everyone to watch it. It’s time to rethink the #nonprofit sector. Charities are expected to solve the world’s problems from curing cancer, to saving endangered species, to ending hunger, to solving mental health and addiction. ⁉️How are they supposed to do that on a shoestring and with “conditions” limiting the use of funding received based on what some random donor (without expertise on the cause) tells them to spend their funding on? It’s absurd. We have no issue celebrating and glorifying the icons of business — a select few and their companies, mostly from one category of humans — earning billions of dollars, who are able to spend their earnings how they deem for scaling and earning more profit while not actually solving issues of substance and critical importance for our planet and life on it, while, over in the nonprofit charitable sector, we have a whole different set of rules. Nonprofits aren’t able to hire and/or reward their best and brightest, they’re not allowed “failure” of any kind which limits innovation and the ability to try and test things for fear of losing funding. We are collectively critical of charities that try and scale through marketing spend —something every for-profit business does. ⏰It’s time we stopped this madness when societies expectations — our expectations — are that charities will solve our collective problems. As someone who has been a lifelong volunteer for numerous charities and vocal about a multitude of causes, sat on boards, and vetted charities for funding with multi-million dollar budgets, the truths found in this film make absolute sense. 💡Antiquated Government regulations must change, donors must change. Let’s rethink charity and empower the nonprofit sector to do what it takes to solve the many reasons they exist. 🙏Thank you to all who made this important film possible and for those who bravely shared their stories of personal heartbreak to drive the message home. Did you know that most CSR platforms won't distribute funds to a charity until a minimum amount directed toward that charity has been met? That as a result, user donations can sit in limbo for months - and in some cases years? That's right. And yes, it's ridiculous. Here's what happens. Most CSR platforms wait until month-end and then aggregate donations to the same charity that have been directed by users across all their customers. They then make a single payment to the charity, often 30-50 days later. But if only a handful of people have donated to a particular charity - say an aggregate total of $25 - they don't distribute the funds. They wait until a minimum has been met, like $100. Does the user know this? Nope. They think their $10 or $25 went immediately to the small local animal shelter they walk past every day. Do the nonprofits know this? Nope. They're none the wiser to the fact that their contributions are being withheld. Does this sound like a system focused on user experience and community impact? Nope. At Groundswell we distribute all donations within 24 hours. Why?
