My latest Philadelphia Inquirer story

Let's be clear, Melrose Ave. hasn't been cool since the TV series started all those decades ago. Rents immediately soared, tourists from far away descended like locusts and the cops, egged on by the locals dying of AIDS, started giving tickets to everyone to line city coffers. Almost overnight, kids couldn't afford it; which is how Fairfax had its short spot in the sun. Now, Cantor's Deli is barely hanging on even though they own their very dilapidated building which would've been condemned years ago if it wasn't so culturally important. Most of the buildings are in such poor condition, they're best suited for demolition and the area is well-suited for high-density low-income residential apartment blocks; something progressives want everywhere they don't live. I haven't specifically sought out the street since the 20th century. Also ignored, is the hard reality that LA has very few native white teenagers anymore, especially anywhere near that street and the locals who control the dirt there have zero interest in creating a zone popular among teenagers of color regardless of their liberal politics. Like many things in LA which were once great, its long entered the history books and will not be returning. No worries, the far western edges of Melrose near the Pacific Design Center are a plutocrats paradise if you're into Stella McCartney and other 5-figure designers per piece. Teenagers will not be allowed in by the very large security men of color carrying firearms stationed at every door. This is what "inclusion" looks like in LA these days. https://lnkd.in/gfc8pqhX

Memphis was named the most dangerous city in America for pedestrians by the Smart Growth America #DangerousByDesign 2024 Report. This did not happen by accident. This is the *result* of decades of investing in cars and trucks over human beings. It is the result of our city, county, state and federal governments creating a built environment that demeans human life. This harms everyone, but destroys those outside of cars the most. Memphis cannot bring back the 343 people killed walking the last few years, but it *can* change its priorities. It cannot sacrifice human lives in favor of speed and convenience for drivers. Chicago is a city of many names, neighborhoods and dreams, but to @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, it can be described in one word… home. The food: Chicago is a foodie's paradise, with deep-dish pizza, hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, and more. 3. The lakefront: Chicago sits on the shores of Lake Michigan, offering miles of beautiful lakefront parks and beaches. 4. The museums: Chicago has some of the best museums in the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the field Museum, and the Museum of Science and Industry, where as a youth, I competed in Chicago School Science Fair. 5. The sports teams: Chicago is home to some of the most beloved Championship-Winning Sports Teams in the Country, including the Cubs (2016 World Series), the White Sox (2005 World Series), the Bulls (1991–93, 1996–98), and Blackhawks (2015), and the Bears (1986). Downtown DC needs a hub for arts and culture and Chinatown would be perfect anchored by the Smithsonian’ Portrait and American Art Museums, Shakespeare Theater, Wooly Mammoth Theater, MLK Jr. Memorial Library, National Law Enforcement Museum, National Building Museum, Capital Jewish Museum, and the plethora of great restaurants already there! Relying on sports is only one option of many. I hope the mayor selects people other than developers to think this through like Destination DC, DowntownDC BID, and the leaders of the aforementioned organizations. When we started going there 20 years ago, it wasn’t for sports it was to explore a place that was uniquely DC, it was an alternative to Georgetown and DuPont, to shop, eat, and walk with friends. So much potential if we look to other models around the country that have successfully revitalized neighborhoods.
