Diageo, the British alcoholic beverage company, has announced plans to work with PA Consulting on a trial paper-based packaging solution for Bailey’s—their iconic Irish cream liqueur brand. 🍾 The bottle is a “dry molded fiber bottle” consisting of 90% paper, with a thin plastic liner and foil seal. According to Packaging Scotland, the bottle is designed to be recycled in paper waste streams without consumers needing to separate the plastic liner prior to disposal. The trial included 2,000 of the paper-based bottles in “mini format” (80 ml) at the Time Out Festival, which took place in Barcelona March 26–28, 2024. Ewan Andrew, the President and Global supply chain and procurement and CSO at Diageo was quoted in Packaging Scotland stating: “When it comes to our packaging, we’re taking an approach of progress over perfection, knowing our packaging will need to evolve along with consumer needs and technological advancements.” Read more on the trial and innovation here: https://bit.ly/4cbWtag #Baileys #beveragepackaging #packagingdesign #paperpackaging #sustainablepackaging #circulareconomy

𝘽𝙖𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙮𝙨 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚𝙨 😍 #Sustainability Diageo will trial a paper bottle format this weekend for its Irish cream liqueur Baileys. As spirits companies look to reduce their glass usage in favour of more planet-friendly packaging, paper-based bottles are being explored as a solution. Diageo previously worked on a plastic-free paper bottle for its Scotch whisky Johnnie Walker, produced in partnership with venture management company Pilot Lite. The company said the bottle is still in the development phase. For Baileys, Diageo has partnered with PA Consulting, as part of the Bottle Collective with PA and PulPac, and will trial a 90% paper dry-moulded fibre bottle, which comes with a thin plastic liner and a foil seal. Jamie Stone, design and innovation expert at PA, said the dry-moulded fibre technology has “immense potential” and is a “huge step forward”. He explained: “Not only is it water-saving, energy-efficient and recyclable, but it is also viable at commercial manufacturing speeds and scale. Working with Diageo and other organisations through our Bottle and Blister Pack Collectives has enabled us to pool resources and dramatically accelerate the time to market for this important innovation.” Diageo will test out 2,000 bottles at the Time Out festival in Barcelona this weekend (25-26 May). The company will observe how the bottles travel, having been filled on-site in Ireland. Consumer interaction with the material will also be a focus – each bottle is designed for recycling in standard paper streams, so people don’t need to separate the plastic liner from the bottle when disposing. Ewan Andrew, president of global supply chain and procurement and chief sustainability officer at Diageo, said: “When it comes to our packaging, we’re taking an approach of progress over perfection, knowing our packaging will need to evolve along with consumer needs and technological advancements.“The consumer is becoming more sustainability savvy and we believe we can meet that need using our design and innovation to bring premium products and more sustainable solutions together.” Diageo added that it is looking into developing paper formats for its wider portfolio, and is working on a spiral-wound paper-based bottle for its Filipino rum brand, Don Papa. Diageo aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030, as well as increasing diversity across its leadership teams. The 10-year plan, titled Society 2030: Spirit of Progress, covers sustainability, diversity and positive drinking. In March, Diageo released 30,000 aluminium bottles of Baileys as part of its sustainability commitments.

🚀 How can packaging innovation reshape the future of beverages? The profound impact of packaging design on consumer perceptions and purchasing decisions is undisputed. It's not just about how a product looks, but also how it feels and the message it conveys. While innovation has been rampant in various sectors, the beverages industry has somewhat lagged behind – until recently. 🔍 Carlsberg Group's groundbreaking initiative involving the testing of 8,000 beers in paper fiber bottles is truly exciting. These eco-friendly bottles not only promise to retain carbonation, taste, and insulate better than traditional glass but also offer the potential for substantial carbon and energy savings, along with reduced distribution costs. However, the practicality and consumer acceptance of this concept remain to be seen. I eagerly anticipate the results of Carlsberg's sustainable packaging solutions, as they have the potential to revolutionize the industry's landscape. It's an exciting time for innovation in the beverage industry. 👉 Check out the full article for detailed insights and share your thoughts in the comments: https://lnkd.in/eTavRfBM ✉️ You want to #StayOnTheBeatWithMe? Pick of the Day (thanks FoodNavigator) This article is a compelling read, and it's quite astonishing that regulatory bodies have green-lit such a move, considering the challenge it presents in maintaining information accessibility. It's a bold step for the brands involved, and although currently limited to a trial in select grocery stores, it signals a promising direction. For Coca-Cola, the risks seem minimal in the grand scheme, given the iconic status of their bottle and cap design. However, the strategy for Sprite's bottle raises some doubts in my mind. The concept appears particularly shaky when it comes to wine bottles. While an initial brand might capture attention with a label-free bottle, the idea of having multiple unlabelled bottles side by side on a shelf seems impractical. Moreover, recalling a conversation with a wine shop owner who questioned if my acquaintances "drank the label", I affirmed they did, highlighting the underestimated value of the label in consumer choice. #foodtech #packaging #wastemanagement #sustainability
