Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee’s Post

We’re so grateful to have had the incredible Deepa Prasad join us from Feeding America last week! We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to learn from her — her wisdom and insights will greatly benefit all of us here at the food bank. Thank you for your visit, Deepa, and we hope to see you again soon!

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity of doing my food bank internship at Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. The amazing team is lead by Elaine Streno who along with her leadership team, staff and partners have committed to the mission to end hunger in 18 counties across East Tennessee. I am grateful to have seen all the amazing work that the food bank is doing in East Tennessee where over 230k people are food insecure. I got to learn about some of their innovative programs centering neighbors experiencing food insecurity: increasing access to fresh produce and culturally relevant food with mobile pantry distribution, choice model that provides dignity for people who visited food pantries, path of hope that works with neighbors to achieve their goals and lead a life of self sufficiency, their nutrition access program that includes a cooking class as part of the after school program to improve food literacy and foster students’ healthy relationships with food and cooking, and many more programs. I am truly humbled by the passion and motivation of the food bank staff in the mission to end hunger. I feel energized and grateful to be part of the Feeding America network.
