Johnson Controls International disclosed that a ransomware attack in September 2023 incurred $27 million in expenses and resulted in a data breach, with attackers accessing corporate data. The attack, initiated through breaches in the company's Asia offices, forced Johnson Controls to shut down parts of its IT infrastructure, affecting customer-facing systems. Dark Angels, a ransomware gang utilizing encryptors derived from the leaked source code of the Babuk and Ragnar Locker operations, claimed responsibility for the attack, demanding a $51 million ransom to delete stolen data. While initially attributing service disruptions to a "cybersecurity incident," Johnson Controls has now confirmed the breach in a report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), detailing unauthorized access, data theft, and ransomware deployment. Johnson Controls anticipates expenses to increase as they assess the extent of data theft and collaborate with cybersecurity experts. Despite the breach, the company assures that it has contained the unauthorized activity and asserts the availability of its digital products and services, including OpenBlue and Metasys. #cybersecurity #riskigy #informationsecurity #security #cloudsecurity #cyberattack #datasecurity #networksecurity #cybercrime #hacked #hacker #scammer #vciso #phishing #infosec #ransomware #ciso #databreach #humanfirewall #malware
