US Food and Drug Administration Seafood Safety Updates Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition FDA Issues Import Alert for Food Products with Chemical Contaminants Including PFAS FDA has recently issued a new import alert for human food products with detectable levels of chemical contaminants that may present a safety concern to human health. PFAS are a diverse group of thousands of chemicals used in many different types of products. PFAS in the environment can enter the food supply through plants and animals grown, raised, or processed in contaminated areas. 🛎 Buffered vinegar now officially authorised as a food additive. A definitive end to the #cleanlabelling saga for this ingredient used to be used as a common ingredient with preservative and acidity regulator properties. The SCOPAFF considered a couple a years ago that, considering its technological function, it should be considered as a #foodadditive and must undergo an authorisation procedure. Now, food business operators (FBOs) can reintegrate this ingredient into their products. However, the caveat lies in the identification process—it's now officially a food additive. 🏷️ Check the Commission Regulation 2023/2086 amending Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council and the Annex to Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 as regards the use of buffered vinegar as a preservative and acidity regulator is out. 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐫𝐮𝐩 (𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝) 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝. European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated the safety of isomaltulose syrup (dried) as novel food, and concluded that the ingredient is as safe as sucrose. The application, submitted by Evonik Creavis, provided a full manufacturing process, which was sufficient for EFSA despite being the process of a pilot plant. The process uses a sucrose isomerase from Serratia plymuthica. Interrestingly, the applicant did not provide any pharmacokinetic or safety data, but used the scientific literature to complete these parts. The novel food is intended to be used as a replacement of sucrose. EFSA concludes that the novel food is as safe as sucrose.
