Founder and CEO of Awesome Motive (We're hiring). Entrepreneur. Investor. Over 25 million websites use our software.
From a simple idea to 200,000+ websites in just a year 🚀 Here's the story of how we built a UserFeedback product ... and lessons learned. I was pretty annoyed with Hotjar pricing ... paying $59 per month to collect 250 survey responses is crazy So I had my team built a simple User Feedback survey tool last year. Because really this isn't rocket science, and no one should have to pay the Hotjar tax. We made the basic version free for all WordPress website owners who wanted to collect feedback from their website visitors. Free version here: https://lnkd.in/etnU6WiU Of course I got a pretty slick domain too: userfeedback.com We priced the Pro version of the survey tool at a fair price -- $49 for the first year which is 90% cheaper than Hotjar. And just did some content marketing. Of course we did some promotion in our existing MonsterInsights user base too. In just over a year, we're now at 200,000+ websites using this survey tool and growing fast! This tool is great for getting really high quality feedback from your users at the right time: - eCommerce website owners using Woo Commerce - course creators using MemberPress - digital product creators using Easy Digital Downloads - SaaS companies for their pricing pages - and so much more Think post-purchase survey, pricing page survey, returning customer surveys, and basically every other type of qualitative insight. We use it across many of my own companies because insights are extremely valuable in us making the right decisions. Here are some lessons / key takeaways from this launch: 1. You don't always need to build a shiny new product Often building something simple at an affordable price for the right target market is all what's needed for you to build a nice business. 2. Total Addressable Market matters Way too many entrepreneurs get this wrong. If you build a product where the TAM is low, it's a harder journey. Here we knew that Hotjar had 1.2M+ websites using their tool according to both Builtwith and their own site. So getting customers is much easier -- especially because we knew the pain point existed for so many users. Analytics never tell the full story. You need qualitative feedback alongside it to get a full picture. 3. Ecosystem Advantage (Barnacle on the Whale) WordPress powers over 43% of all websites on the internet ... yet when I searched for "Feedback" tool in WordPress, there wasn't a single good solution that did what we wanted. A lot of times, you may think that WordPress has 60,000+ plugins so all ideas are taken. But that's not true. There are literally SO MANY gaps even right now. Do the research and launch. If you have a cool WordPress product and you want to partner with us, DM me :)
