UNESCO’s big boss, Audrey Azoulay, is sounding the alarm bells, saying #socialmedia platforms need to step up their game and stop reinforcing negative #stereotypes that hold girls back. She's all about making sure these platforms don't limit girls' dreams and opportunities. So, what's the deal? It turns out that scrolling through #Instagram and #TikTok might not be as harmless as we thought. The report says these platforms, with their fancy #algorithms and addictive designs, are making girls feel bad about themselves. Think unrealistic beauty standards and cyberbullying – not cool, right? And get this: Facebook's own research found that a whopping 32% of teenage girls feel worse about their bodies after using Instagram. Uh oh! But it's not just about feeling down about looks. Social media is also messing with girls' heads when it comes to learning and #careerchoices. TikTok's quick-hit videos might be fun, but they're not exactly helping with homework or focusing in class. And when it comes to #STEM subjects – you know, science, tech, engineering, and math – girls are getting the short end of the stick. Despite efforts to promote STEM education, the report says women still aren't getting a fair shot. Only 35% of STEM grads worldwide are women. That's not cool either. So, what can we do about it? The report says we need to invest more in #education and make sure #digitalplatforms are playing by the rules. We need policies that support girls in STEM and encourage them to chase their dreams, whether that's in coding, engineering, or AI. Bottom line: Social media should be a place where everyone feels empowered, not put down. Let's make sure our online world is a positive one for all. Check out the report here. 👇

Social media influencers can be one of the biggest influences on a young girl’s career choices. 📲 The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and IF/THEN recently put out a study on if and how entertainment media perpetuates STEM representation inequalities - a field that women remain underrepresented in. TLDR: 🧬STEM characters have a positive impact on girls who are watching (especially for women of color). 🧬Showing girls and women with an array of STEM interests is important. 🧬So is seeing the realities behind careers in STEM - mistakes and all. 🧬Seeing girls and young women in STEM careers attracts more young women and girls to STEM careers. If this is true for T.V. and film, imagine what this means for social media - where young women and girls are spending HOURS of their day? This is why we invest in highlighting working young women on social media. This special issue aims to expose and resolve the ways intercollegiate athletic programs reproduce and resist intersectional systems of gender power. For example, organizing sports according to a rigid gender binary, inequity in resource allocation for women’s vs. men’s sport, disparate pay for women coaches and administrators, and lack of racial, class, and ethnic diversity across sport opportunities. With this special issue, we seek to build critical scholarship on athletics in higher education that considers the diversity of gender expressions.

This Sunday we celebrated International Day of Women & Girls in Science – an occasion to recognize the brilliant minds that continue to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and pave the way for a more inclusive future in STEM. A recent Gallup poll revealed that female Gen Z youth report learning about fewer technical STEM concepts in their middle and high school coursework than their male counterparts do. This discrepancy in exposure does not necessarily come from schools favoring boys over girls in promoting STEM; rather, it likely results from girls being less inclined to pursue STEM-related coursework due to confidence issues. Clearly, there is still a pressing need for concerted efforts to enhance girls' engagement with #STEM. As a proud mom to young women embarking on careers in STEM, I am constantly inspired by the strength and dedication of the next generation. It is our responsibility as their mentors to offer unwavering support on their journeys, ensuring that no gender-based barriers get in their way of progress. #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirls https://lnkd.in/eD7GkAKF

In the current #MeToo moment, there has been renewed emphasis on gender transformative teaching in schools. This work, however, is difficult and discomforting especially in relation to challenging issues of masculine entitlement with boys. I would like to share a paper that examines the complexities and intensities of emotion associated with this discomfort. The paper considers three areas that are important for educators to contemplate in how they approach this work: 1) the significance of pedagogic discomfort; 2) the pedagogical principle of mutual vulnerability; and 3) the value of strategic empathy and ethical self-reflection.
