One of the best articles on water crisis management is featured in DOWN TO EARTH magazine. The author, Sunita Narain, expertly summarizes the water-related challenges in remote villages, highlighting that access to water remains a zero-sum game despite government efforts to provide water connections. #waterwastage #earth #earthcrisis #saveearth #motherearth #nature

In South Florida, due to the miles (or kilometers 😉 ) of canals and levees combined with water needs for water supply and the environment and the need for flood protection water management is an important driving force in how our ecosystems like the vitally important estuaries and the iconic Everglades function. In our recently (fresh off the press) published paper we evaluate how the change in upstream water management coupled with new restoration infrastructure can significantly improve conditions in our northern Estuaries (i.e. Caloosahatchee and St Lucie River Estuaries). BUT we still have much to do to build more resilience in the greater Everglades Ecosystem. No comparison of any Natural calamities in any part of the world. Damage done to both properties and life is same and hard to digest. In the end, we must work towards reasons for such natural calamities - 1. Property Management in accordance with environment safety, 2. Urban planning in accordance with proper drainage system, traffic management, building management, waste management, etc. 3. Proper mechanism for disaster management to handle such natural calamities. 4. Last but not the least, ecological balance must be maintained around human habitat. In short, mutual co-existence of all living beings must be taken care of by concerned authorities while making the town planning regulations.

Possibility for flooding in low lying areas ⚠️
Watershed Conditions Statement - Water Safety The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises that the Environment Canada have issued Special Weather Advisory for Tuesday January 9, 2024. Forecast snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm, with snow changing to rain this evening. Rainfall amounts of 10 to 15 mm. Given that local soil conditions are partially frozen, the snowmelt runoff combined with the rainfall may result in elevated water levels in rivers and streams within our jurisdiction. While widespread flooding is not expected, the possibility for flooding in various low-lying areas of the watershed exists. Watercourses will be flowing higher than normal causing local streams and rivers to become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges. Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses. This Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect through Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Last week, our partner Catherine Numa from IUCN participated in the event "#Wetland Solutions for Water Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction" hosted by Wetlands International and WaterLANDS as part of the #EUGreenWeek. There, she spoke about the changes in the spatial distribution of animal species in the #EbroDelta in Catalonia and demonstrated mapping tools developed in collaboration with EURECAT to better understand wetland ecologies. The key takeaway was that while wetland restoration and other Nature-Based Solutions (#NbS) offer significant benefits for #waterresilience and disaster risk reduction, they are not sustainable in isolation. An integrated approach is essential, combining NbS with nature-inspired technologies, including grey infrastructures, to address the complexities of environmental challenges. OWC is a Southern Alberta non-profit, using science, planning, education for healthy watersheds & connected communities.
The fourth instalment in our "Understanding Drought" blog series is now live. In it, we look at where water is used in the province and Conservation, Efficiency, and Productivity (CEP) Plans. "With Alberta's population on the rise, so too has the demand for water. Seven pivotal sectors are instrumental in supporting the province's economy, infrastructure, and the quality of life for most Albertans. These sectors, tasked with reporting their water usage, are encouraged to adopt more efficient water conservation and usage practices." https://lnkd.in/gF34PPcC

💧It’s #WorldWaterDay - a day to highlight the importance of fresh water and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Given the persisting dry conditions felt across southern Alberta, protection and conservation of freshwater is more important than ever for the health and success of our City and region. To support World Water Day and battle the risk of water shortage, we are calling on local businesses and residents to join us in conserving water because #everydropcounts. The City of Airdrie is proactively bolstering our drought preparedness by working closely with neighbouring municipalities, monitoring environment and policy conditions and developing plans to ensure readiness for our city, local businesses and residents. Locally, we are evaluating the efficiency of water usage by City facilities and operations and we are amending the Waterworks Bylaw to ensure alignment and consistency with regional partners which will result in improved effectiveness of water conservation. This year's theme for World Water Day, 'Water for Peace,' underscoring the vital role water plays in global stability and prosperity. Cooperation on water paves the way for cooperation on all shared challenges. Learn about how you can make a difference at https://lnkd.in/gM2DK8mJ 🌍

Today marks the one-year milestone since DEFRA declared the intention of commence Schedule 3 of The Flood and Water Management Act 2010 in England. This milestone signifies the integration of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) as a crucial aspect in all new developments, following the lead of Wales. Despite the publication by DEFRA in January 10th, 2023, there has been a lack of subsequent information. One might question whether this pause gives residential development in England a necessary breather or marks a squandered 12 months in the pursuit of mitigating flood risks and enhancing biodiversity and amenity.

Last week the UK Parliament published a POSTNote on Freshwater Habitat Restoration. Freshwater habitats provide ecosystem services by reducing flood risk and providing drinking water. However, this habitat is being destroyed by human activities. While there is a target to restore 75% of waters by 2042, there is a risk that this is not possible. One limitation as outlined in the POSTNote is that there is a serious lack of long-term funding which limits the evidence base for restoration.
