Thrilled to share highlights from the recent field camp organized by the KNUST GEOPHYSICAL SOCIETY Geophysical Society in collaboration with the SEG Foundation! and Department of Physics, KNUST. Our team delved into the fascinating suevite deposit from the Lake Bosomtwi crater, gaining invaluable insights into its economic significance. Suevite, a unique impactite, is rich in silica and rare minerals, making it a potential resource for various industries, including construction, technology, and even renewable energy. Throughout the camp, we engaged in practical training using advanced geophysical instruments such as Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), resistivity, and seismic surveys. This hands-on experience not only enhanced our understanding of subsurface structures but also equipped us with essential skills for our future careers in geoscience. Additionally, we had the pleasure of conducting an educational outreach program at Bosomtwi Girls' STEM Senior High School, where we inspired young minds to explore the world of geosciences and the importance of STEM education. It's rewarding to see the next generation of scientists motivated and ready to make their mark! In the past 10 years, great progress has been made in time lapse #seismic acquisition, processing, analysis, and integration with other #subsurface contributors. These breakthroughs have allowed for generation of better repeatable and therefore cleaner difference images of the subsurface. 18 Sept. at 10 a.m. U.S. Central time. Non-invasive #imaging of soil-plant continuum processes, such as root and soil water distributions, can be used to optimize agricultural practices. This presentation from #SEG #NearSurface will show the how in-situ time-lapse horizontal crosshole ground penetrating radar (#GPR) and root images can be linked. Data collected for maize growing seasons in Germany is used, where root development and GPR permittivity were monitored at six depths across different treatments and soil types. To maximize the value of the KNUST SEG Geophysics Field Camp experience, we strategically organized two separate programs: one for our final-year undergraduate students and another which included graduate students and students from other Universities apart from KNUST. That means over the past two weeks, we successfully provided 40 students with invaluable hands-on training, equipping them for future fieldwork in their careers One step at a time: we keep investing in students' development. This is a testament to our commitment to fostering the next generation of geoscientists. Most African countries depend on natural resources which require geoscience to extract and use. Without the requisite skills, these countries are unable to utilize the resources fully. Our field camps help to do that. In addition, we visited the Bosumtwi Girls STEM Senior High School to spread the word about geophysics and the scientific importance of the Bosumtwi Impact Crater. Outreaches are an essential part of our field camps, and we are grateful to the Headmistress of Bosumtwi Girls STEM SHS for giving us the opportunity to introduce the students to Geophysics.
