"Architecture mirrors the culture it is built from, while simultaneously aspiring to lead that culture. This is almost oxymoronic since reflecting and projecting our values is an essential part of every human life, and architecture is exquisitely human. Our buildings embody us, with all of our mixed messages." What an opening paragraph by Duo Dickinson for the COMMON EDGE COLLABORATIVE. When it comes to Dutch architecture, opinions can be polarized. Some argue that it's always been, and continues to be, boring. But is that truly the case? Aaron Betsky challenges this notion of Dutch architecture as boring in his thought-provoking article on Dezeen. He highlights the diverse range of architectural styles and perspectives that Dutch architects offer, from the iconic works of Rem Koolhaas to the innovative designs of Wiel Arets and Jacob Van Rijs. My personal question is, is industrialization of the architectural practice what is causing the monotony of the boxes mentioned in the article, or will we continue to blame regulations? #DutchArchitecture #ArchitecturalPerspectives #DesignDiversity Link to article: https://lnkd.in/eAn7pReT

The Influence Of Post-Modernist Architecture The architectural landscape of the 20th century was dominated by the Modernist movement, which championed simplicity, functionality, and a rejection of traditional ornamental elements. However, as the century progressed, a growing dissatisfaction with the rigidity and uniformity of Modernist architecture began to emerge, paving the way for a new era of architectural expression – Post-Modernism. The seeds of Post-Modernist architecture were sown in the mid-20th century, as architects and theorists began to question the dogmatic principles of Modernism. One of the pioneers of this movement was Robert Venturi, whose seminal work, "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture," published in 1966, challenged the prevailing notion of simplicity as the ultimate virtue in design. Fragmented and distorted geometry in architecture depart from conventional forms, embracing irregular shapes and asymmetry to create visually dynamic spaces. By breaking away from traditional constraints, architects can evoke complexity, movement, and depth within structures, challenging perceptions and inviting exploration. This approach fosters creativity, innovation, and sustainability, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of human experiences while redefining the boundaries of architectural design. #architecture #architecturedesign #expressionism #deconstruction #concept #style #design #fragmentation #distortion #sharpangle #unconventional

#NewArticle Seventeenth-century Seville houses: a survey by the Alarife Juan De Legarra (1637) Pilar Moya-Olmedo, María Núñez-González & Fernando Vilaplana-Villajos The intention of this study is to illustrate that the information contained in building surveys goes beyond simple descriptions or measurements often accompanied by drawings. They are a comprehensive account that, even centuries later, help reconstruct the architecture, material culture and everyday life that no longer exist. This research explores the architectural development of the city, offering fresh insights into its architecture, heritage, and history. It supplements existing historical, visual, and written records derived from prior studies with a meticulously curated bibliography. Additionally, it uses visualisation techniques to reconstruct buildings, augmenting the research. https://lnkd.in/e-wQrvNQ

This thought-provoking article explores the current state of American architecture and the factors that have led us to our current design predicament. From suburban sprawl and the dominance of the car to standardization and a lack of regionalism and innovation, the article dives deep into the root causes of the issue. One interesting point made is the question of whether college campuses are the last bastion of American identity.
