Our competition entry for Arolsen Archives was awarded 3rd Prize! Architecture: AFF Architects Landscape architecture:Landschafts.Architektur Birgit Hammer Visualizations: willbe.studio The 'Arolsen Archives' are the world's most extensive document collection for the protection and preservation of the victims and survivors of National Socialism, and have been recognized as a UNESCO world document heritage since 2013. In addition to the main building with the administration headquarters, which is a few meters away, a new building is to be built to secure the important archive material. The urban development integration of the design takes the local environment into account by sensitively adjusting the building height, roof pitch and building volume. The park-side entrance to the new archive building - with its distinctive sickle shape - opens onto the dense greenery and emphasizes the connection to the main building, which will continue to serve as an arrival point for visitors. In a careful and sensitive approach to the meaning of the archive, the building volume develops around a monolithic core in the center of the building and follows the guiding idea of 'remembering and preserving'. The archive materials are arranged compactly in three above-ground and two underground levels. In the metaphor of protective layers, the public areas and office spaces surround the archive core on the ground floor and are structurally formulated as a delicate structure with wooden trusses and surrounding glazing. The lightness of the structure is reminiscent of a pavilion and consciously seeks a connection to the surrounding landscape. Inside the building, the monochrome color play of wood, the pigmented, layered concrete and the glazed light strip in the roof create a contemplative appearance. The handling of the archive body serves as the main access point. Work areas and offices are distributed around it in a grid and can be flexibly zoned in the future and adapted to changing spatial requirements. The open space concept envisages careful interventions in the existing landscape. A large proportion of the existing trees can be preserved and protected and offers space to embed the extension building. The path connection between the old and new buildings follows the crescent shape of the cantilevered roof. Seating areas positioned in sections along the path create gentle transitions to the park's green space. Even in my two decades in Architecture I have seen Design in the Netherlands become more and more conservative to the point where even the simplest of projects did not pencil. An unfortunate reality... However, the article touches on one aspect which might be the most contemporary and important challenge for architects to tackle. And the Dutch know how to do it!
