Managing problematic student behaviour is one of the most persistent, challenging, and controversial issues facing schools today. Yet despite the best intentions to build a more inclusive and punitive-free education system, school suspensions and expulsions remain. I am deeply worried by the latest school exclusion figures. Last year, approximately 85,000 primary school children were suspended or excluded. 27,000 of these children were 6 or under. These are the highest numbers ever. Suspensions and exclusions teach children that they are not worthy, and research shows that this effects children's grades. 90% of those who are excluded from primary school failing English and Maths. Poor behaviour is often rooted in wider issues, which suspensions and exclusions do not change. Source: Sky News #schoolpolicy #school #education #exclusion

Public secondary students are skipping more school than ever recorded in Victoria, sending absenteeism well above pre-COVID levels with refusal rates contributing to a surge in online learning. Students enrolled in state secondary schools missed an average of 5.6 weeks in Victoria last year – up from just 3.5 weeks in 2018. A federal inquiry has called for a national plan to tackle chronic absence and the impacts of the growing school refusal trend, which experts say is disproportionately impacting poorer families. https://lnkd.in/gvZK2_TR #TheAge #Absentism #students #schoolattendance

From the archives... I applaud parents becoming active in the education of their children (it is one of the foremost predictors of student achievement), and I support any effort to make the content of school material public or otherwise available to parents. However, I caution those who might be overly optimistic that the school system that exists today is somehow reformable. I do not believe it is. I believe that schooling as a paradigm for education has proven woefully ineffective, and even if parents regain a semblance of input (and that is about the most you should expect), the overall system of schooling remains under the unwieldy bureaucracy of government control, with undue influence from national, state, and local teachers’ unions. #HomeEducation #homeschool #homeschooling #education #GetOutNow #PublicSchoolExit #ChristianEducation #EdcuationIsDiscipleship #ChristianHomeschoolRevolution https://lnkd.in/giVr4YiJ

Along with the important issue of teacher qualifications for primary level that authors highlight, quality of pre-service teacher education curriculum and its delivery needs urgent attention and serious work!
Primary school teachers need specialised pre-service teacher education to address the needs of young children. The Supreme Court ruling on teaching qualifications is an opportunity to strengthen the system by improving the availability of teachers for early years.
