SOSA co-founder and ocean explorer, Dr. Torben Riehl presented at the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz (Academy of Sciences and Literature). Dr. Riehl emphasized the challenges currently facing marine biodiversity and shared the SOSA model as a solution to describe more ocean species before they become extinct. SOSA’s unique approach is three-fold: Discover, Protect, and Inspire. To accelerate discovery, SOSA is developing the globally first taxonomy service and building a global expertise network. To increase protection, SOSA is building capacity to assess the extinction risk of marine invertebrate species and includes them on the IUCN Red List. To inspire action, SOSA is increasing awareness and value of marine invertebrates with the public. Learn more about SOSA here: https://lnkd.in/eSSPaa6w

The tropics are home to most of the world’s biodiversity and the majority of directly ocean-dependent people. A recent paper shares how engaging this tropical majority can make ocean governance and science more equitable and effective. The co-authors, which include Josheena Naggea, Ph.D. Fiorenza Micheli & Alfredo Giron Nava, share four key actions: 1. Equity in ocean science and governance 2. Reconnecting people and the ocean 3. Redefining ocean literacy 4. Decolonizing ocean science. This framework is critical in it demonstrates the need to site and expand protected areas in a strategic way - that takes into account habitat replication, connectivity, adequacy of size - it's quality not quantity that can make MPAs more than the sum of their parts.
Excited to announce our new paper presenting a first quantitative assessment of marine species and habitats across the United States' extensive ocean territory. We find that U.S. marine protected areas fall well short of an effective network to sustain our ocean biodiversity, despite 26 percent of the U.S. ocean nominally protected. But the study also points to solutions. See more here: https://lnkd.in/efjH2MAr This work is based on a practical framework developed by a dream team of scientists and conservation planners. Many thanks to our co-authors and to Lenfest Ocean Program, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for support.

🕰️It’s HELCOM Through History time! 🕰️ The third HELCOM holistic assessment (HOLAS III) provides a wide-ranging update on the environmental status of the Baltic Sea for the period 2016–2021. Five thematic assessments were released, covering the topics of economic and social analyses; spatial distribution of pressures and impacts; hazardous substances, marine litter, underwater noise and non-indigenous species; biodiversity; and eutrophication 🚣♀️ #HELCOMThroughHistory

From the modeling of diadromous species' marine distributions to the characterization of their current and future marine habitats - Frontiers in Marine Science: Introduction: Many diadromous fish species are currently facing the threat of generalized population extirpations across their range, and conservation efforts implemented primarily within the continental domain may not be sufficient to ensure their viability. In consequence, better understanding the use of the marine environment by these species turned out to be critical. https://lnkd.in/eP_JrqBa

Excellent achievement toward preaching about our marine resources. This applicable brief should highlight how to implement Marine Spatial Planning (MSPs) which is one of the Saudi Vision 2030 goals to achieve in both the Red Sea and the Gulf.
The European Marine Board IVZW, an #OceanDecade Implementing Partner, has just released a new brief on marine habitat mapping that aims to inform policymakers, programme managers, research funders and the wider science-policy and scientific communities in the advancement of next-generation marine habitat mapping efforts. In this brief, you'll find the latest insights on: 👉 the crucial role of accurate and extensive marine habitat maps for achieving European and international goals for biodiversity, conservation, restoration and climate action. 👉 the science and policy needs to advance our understanding and documentation of marine habitats, from increasing the resolution of biological information to strengthening coordination mechanisms for interdisciplinary mapping efforts to fill critical gaps. Monitoring is vital to tracking how our threatened species are going. But for some of our trickier to spot species like the critically endangered Plains Wanderer, it can be puzzling to figure out the best way to detect if they are present. A new study by researchers from Museums Victoria, Zoos Victoria, University of Melbourne, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action and La Trobe University found that using sound recordings of Plains Wanderers calls is equally successful as traditional nocturnal spotlighting surveys at detecting their presence. With this new research, it may be possible to survey more sites over a given period of time. This is a great step forward for how we monitor this species as well as other vocal but not so visible species! Access the scientific article here: https://brnw.ch/21wBRxN. The Plains Wanderer is a priority species under the National Threatened Species Action Plan. 📸: Female Plains Wanderer (Carlos Sanchez via iNaturalist)
